The first building you’ll pass is the former home of German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann (1822-90), who found the ancient palace of Troy and underneath the tombs at Mycenae. Up under roof you’ll see engraved ‘IIiou Melathron’ (palace on troy).

Further along you’ll find the Academy of Arts, the University and the National Library. Their sculpted, gilded facades mimis the classical style. Athena and Apollo stand atop the Ionic columns at the Academy, while Socrates and Plato sit at the entrance. The Library has nearly a million books and manuscripts, including amazing hand-illuminated Gospels of the 19th and 11th centuries.

        • My favourite museum in Athens, and one of my favourites in the world. Lots of decorative arts, objects, embroidery, jewellery, Byzantine iconography and historical Greek artefacts and so much more, all housed in a beautiful neoclassical mansion in the city. The cafe is a perfect stop for a drink, the store is a great place for a unique memento. They also have free entry one day per week and several other special collections in other locations around Athens too. An absolute joy to visit.
        • Nice museum and a great bar! Excellent service, really nice waiters!! The prices are good, is not an expensive place. We take 1 cappuccino, 1hot tea and 3 dessert =15,70€ and you can eat here with out paying the entrance of the museum. The entrance of the museum is free all Thursdays.
        • Nice museum of Hellenic history. Not as big as the other museums in Athens but still a nice visit. It takes about 1.5 hours to complete. It has a nice cycladic and press classical section. The restaurant has a nice terrace overlooking the city where you can have a coffee.
        • An interesting wide collection. The labels on the items aren't easy to follow & sometimes seem to be pitched at those who already know their archeology (lots of obscure names for objects). The staff are very friendly and the restaurant is excellent.
        • Really good introduction to Greek history from the Palaeolothic to recent times. Set out in order of time over four floors with lifts. Nice cafe with open terrace having great sunset views.
