Users Assigned: KazmiWhen people think of Greece they think about a wide variety of things: Mediterranean culture, lifestyle, history and climate are probably the first things that come to mind. And then there are the historical parts of Greece: Delphi, Corinth, Mycenae, Knossos(crete), Olympia, Thessaloniki, Athens, the Acropolis to name a few.
Then there is Greek mythology: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hestia,Demeter, Apollo, Artimus, Ares, Athena, Hermes, Aphrodite, Hades, and many demi-gods. The different islands and areas are named in the myths and stories. And to top it all off there’s Greek cuisine, which is rated as some of the tastiest on the entire planet. All in all, there are a thousand reasons to come to Greece, and not a single reason not to.
Greece is a destination that is friendly to all levels of travelers. The islands and coasts are dotted with resorts that can accommodate even the most luxury-minded traveler, while the more adventuresome can simply rent a scooter and zip around the coastal roads with the Mediterranean breeze teasing their hair.
There are, however, a few things to consider when going to Greece if it's your first time. Firstly is the misconception that Greece is a part of Eastern Europe. They aren’t. Neither geographically, nor were they ever part of the Communist blocks. Secondly is the issue of Macedonia. Greeks and Macedonians do not get along. Period. The Greeks considered the name of the country Macedonia to be stolen, and it is an extremely hot topic. In addition, Greeks have a tumultuous history with Turkish people, so be wary when discussing such things over dinner or otherwise. It's also not a good idea to rave about the marbles from the parthanon that is housed in the UK. Greece have been trying to get them returned for years. Lord Elgin is not a hero in Greece.
If you are offended by cigarettes, you're in for a rude awakening. Everyone smokes in Greece. Everyone. Cigarettes are as common as coffee and souvlaki, and while laws are slowly coming into place banning cigarettes in specific places, cigarette smokers can still be found almost everywhere, and non-smoking restaurants are pretty much a myth. It's much better now than five years ago.
The culture, history, food, and the people all combine to make Greece one of the ultimate destinations for any traveler, and it's definitely a country to come back to over and over again. -

You’ll see men walking arm in arm and arguing passionately – a favorite pastime – and every now and then, amid the conglomerate of Grecian faces – small and round, dark or fair – you will notice those same, finely chiseled features that, for centuries, have gazed proudly from classical statues.
