  • Overview You can't Edit

Uganda is a beautiful land of diversity. Folks are warm and welcoming. You will meet many amazing people who are working hard to help those with great challenges.

Famously called the Pearl of Africa by Winston Churchill years ago, Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa that is bordered by Kenya, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania. It is known for being home to one of the most endangered species of mountain gorillas on the planet, and for having possibly the most diverse range of African wildlife throughout the continent. It is generally safe for all levels of travelers, although certain sections can occasionally have unrest due to political differences, so be sure to check with your embassy before heading to the country.

Some people have suggested that Uganda is Africa rolled up into a tiny little ball, with everything that makes the continent so unique wrapped up into one little country. It is home to the Mountains of the Moon, which is the highest mountain range in Africa. It is the source of the Nile, and the national parks and game reserves are some of the most beautiful on the planet, while the opportunity to explore African wildlife up close is without a doubt the best in Africa.

From the Great Rift Valley to the Murchison Falls or the Rwenzori Mountains, the landscapes within Uganda have no competition, anywhere. There is no place on Earth that can match the beauty of this African pearl. Visitors can experience gorilla tracking, rafting on the Nile, safaris, or hiking in the mountains. The food and coffee are divine, although bottled water should be drank rather than tap. Accommodations and transportation will depend on where you go, with buses being the main route of transportation between areas. English is widely understood, as it is the official language. Be sure to bring malaria pills, as it can be a risk in certain parts of the country. But most of all bring your sense of adventure, because if there's one country in Africa that is packed with things to do, it’s Uganda.

  • Culture and Behaviour You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: redplanettravelboss
Before you go, please consider the culture and be sensitive to their customs. After all, we are a guest in their country.
Modesty is the name of the game for women especially and showing of the woman's leg is not appreciated. Shorts are for young boys only.

Pointing using your finger is considered rude but is fine if you extend your arm with palm upward toward the subject. If you want someone to come to you, extend your arm with palm downward and bring your fingers toward your body as if in a scratching motion.

Many rural areas will use fingers to eat; however, in urban areas utensils are the norm.

Making direct eye contact when conversing is not typical unless you are familiar with each other. A sign of respect of young girls to elders is a very low curtsey. Handshakes are common and typical.
  • Languages and Communications You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: redplanettravelboss
English is the stated language but there are many African dialects that are routinely spoken. Urban areas are very easy to converse - getting more difficult as you travel into the bush.

If you speak English, do so slowly and deliberately enunciate words.
  • Visa and entry requirements You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: redplanettravelboss
To enter the country you will need a visa. In April, 2017, the fee is $50 for US citizens. The visa application is found online.

You will need to upload your yellow fever card, a recent picture and the picture page of your passport. The size of the uploads are critical - be sure you have the correct size before you start the process and it is very quick and easy.

When you submit the application you will be given a REFERENCE NUMBER. WRITE IT DOWN AND DO NOT LOSE THAT NUMBER. If you have not received a confirmation in about 2 days, go back to the application page and enter that reference number and it will take you to the confirmation. Print out the confirmation with barcode and you will be all set to pay your $50 at immigration.
  • Yellow Fever Certification You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: redplanettravelboss
The Ministry of Health has announced that Uganda is following the WHO directive that one yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong immunity - but be certain to bring your yellow fever card with proof of vaccination - otherwise you will have to have one at the airport before you can pass through immigration.
