    • Dublin
The increasingly cosmopolitan streets of Dublin have had a tumultuous time recently. As both the greatest benefactor of EU membership and – aside from Iceland’s bankruptcy – and one of the worst suffering nations in the recent recession (as the locals tell it – What’s the difference between Ireland and Iceland? Six months…), Dublin nevertheless remains stoutly characterful, and rightly draws countless tourists.

The Temple Bar district is at the heart of it. The Irish are a vivaciously sociable bunch, and the cobbled streets of Temple Bar host parties night after night, locals energised on Dublin Bay seafood and slurping pint after pint of the ‘The Black Stuff’ (Guinness) whilst listening to the twanging sounds of traditional Irish music, and joining together in the search for a late night ‘lock in’ to keep the revelry moving until dawn.

In fact, head to Smithfield and you can get an early start, with the Jameson Distillery offering whiskey samples and a factory tour (be ready to volunteer fast and you can grab free extras), and St. James’ Gate – the home of Guinness for the coming 9,000 years – just across the river and filling the air with the heady smell of hops for miles around.

Dublin city center has a number of architectural gems, with cathedrals, castles, universities, churches and some fascinating examples of modern style also. They’re all highly picturesque, great examples of the towering architecture that still props up the city center; head for Halfpenny Bridge to hunt down the historical heartland, or sample some of the excellent museums (the National Gallery is particularly noteworthy) for a taste of a fascinating past.

Just outside Dublin you’ll find country pubs and cliff top walks, as well as a spot the locals use as a icy hangover cure, the rocky ‘swimming pool’ that is the 40 foot. Nearby you can explore Ireland’s literary heritage with a trip to James Joyce's former home (a turret overlooking the sea), or grab some fish and chips in a newspaper and sit on the grass with the locals. Dublin is steeped in revolutionary history, but remains an essential – if somewhat expensive – party town. Make the most of both.

      • My wife and I had our wedding reception in this hotel. Our guest party size was just over people. Before summarise my feelings I would just like to say that all of the positive points can be attributed to the hotel and all of the negative points attributed to the Wedding Reception Planning Services attached to the hotel. About half of the guests flew over from London and the other half travelled form various parts of Ireland. Our family and friends really enjoyed the occasion. Having said this there were some UNFORGIVABLE mistakes made on the part of the wedding services which the hotel prides itself so much on. These are some of the worst; 1. Wedding cake not served at all to guests at any point in the evening and guest not alerted to location of cake right in back corner of the room 2. Testimonial book not brought in to Reception are when guests arrived for them to leave a written message. 3. Piano player which was main feature of package we paid for did not turn up on the day. Wedding services tried to hide this absence and only addressed the issue when we brought it to their attention after family and friends told us that there was no piano player on arrival. 4. Layout of the dinning room are on morning of wedding was completely different to layout agreed on previous day. This destroyed our seating plan, leaving immediate family seated very far away from head table. Consequently had to shuffle places around at the last minute which meant important family ended up being seated at undesired tables away from partners and children. These were our main bones of contention and I would urge anybody thinking of choosing this as a wedding venue to read this review and raise all of the above points with them before hand.
      • Nothing special, mattress a bit battered, Way overpriced in December and January.
      • Lacking maintenance in some areas eg. Pool area and bedroom heating. There is a lovely spa area but it's tucked away in a little corner of the building and guests would never know it was there, as there was no advertisement leaflets in the rooms. The decor of the hotel is a bit dated and the overall feeling I had from my stay is that that hotel is just not living up to its potential or what it should be. On a positive note the experience and food in the restaurant was nice in spite of a weird corridor that goes around the restaurant area.
      • I like this place, large but not impersonal. Many quiet seating areas and comfortable rooms. Ample free parking, good food in the restaurant. Small pool, but adequate for a splash.
      • Nice hotel, food was good but nothing to write home about. Spa was the best part.
