An island country just off the coast of India in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka was once a jewel of the Indian Ocean. Today, the northern parts of the island have been devastated by the conflict between the Sri Lanken military and the rebel forces of the LTTE, or Tamil Tigers. While the skirmishes between the two factions have currently ceased, be sure to check with your local embassy for updates on the region. Be warned that even veteran travelers should stay away from the region for the foreseeable future.

Despite the difficulties the country has had in recent years, this island jewel—home to the sci-fi author Sir Arthur C. Clarke from 1956 until his death in 2008—is a tropical paradise. Ringed with golden beaches of soft sand slowly making their way back into the spotlight after the devastation of the 2004 tsunami, with a mountainous interior and lush jungles making up such places as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka boasts an untold number of treasures that are just waiting to be discovered.

From the vertical drop at the edge of Horton’s Plains known as World’s End to the wildlife safaris in Yala National Park, or the capital city of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka contains a variety of destinations and pursuits for all levels of travelers. Hiking, backpacking, sunning on the beach, crawling through the underbrush of the jungle, or simply sitting on the edge of a cliff enjoying the sunrise, there is something for everyone. The country is in the middle of monsoon territory, so trips should be planned around the seasons. December to March is the first, and June to October is the second.

English will only be understood in the tourist regions. The rural parts of the country will know little more than simple “yes” and “no”. Accommodations and transportation will vary depending on where you stay, with the larger, touristier areas having the best of both.

Sri Lanka suffered serious bombings of hotels and religious sites in April 2019. Whilst indiscriminate attacks like these are hard to guard against, they are thankfully rare.

Hotels and resorts are likely to design tougher security perimeters and defenses, as has happened in other parts of the world, which separates travelers from locals (which is what the terrorists want), so ensure you redouble your interaction time with locals to compensate.

      • Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of the main archaeologial attractions in Sri Lanka, and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

The site contains the ruins of a 5th century palace, which sits on top of a huge sheer-sided rock. From the top of the rock there are views over the whole of the plain below.

The site is famous for the frescoes depicting female figures, and for the lion gate with its huge lion's paws either side of the staircase ascending to the palace. At the foot of the rock are the remains of the water gardens.

The climb up the rock is made by stone staircases lower down, and higher up by means of iron staircases which have been attached to the rock. You should have some water and food before the climb. Sigiriya is easily accessed on a tour, or by bus from Dambulla.

Built in the 5 century AC this magnificent complex of geometrically laid gardens, pools, fountains (still working today) as well as oldest surviving murals of maidens has been a palace of the King Kasyapa. Built on top of a 200m high rock, the entrance to the climb once has been through a lions head. Only the huge paws remain today. Half way up the rock are beautifully drawn painted bare breast Maidens whose existence is still a mystery. Which should be the eighth wonder of the world, Sigiriaya, is a must see item in Sri Lanka. The occupation of the gigantic fortress ended when Kasyapa killed himself in a battle with his brother.

There are over 80 caves in the surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation locations. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain the statues and the paintings. Since it's founding in the 1 century BC by King Valagamba, many improvements and additions have been carried out to the sculptures and paintings over the years. Hindu statues are believed to be of the 12 century AD and the latest paintings are of the late 18-century. The temple is a perfect location to view evolution of the ancient Sri Lankan arts. Dambulla is a unique and important historical site because of the amalgamation of the material from many eras.

      • Habarana
Habarana is in the heart of the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. A perfect base for exploring this area. Located in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, Habarana is the center point from which visitors can explore the glorious past and the historical myths of this beautiful country. Culture tourists, as well as wildlife enthusiasts, are bound to find this location a haven to escape to. Habarana is closely located to the Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks which are the transit points to hundreds of Asian elephants and other wildlife during the dry season. • Polonnaruwa

In northeast of Colombo, Polonnaruwa is almost 216 km , 140kms southest of Anuradhapura and 140kms of northeast of Kandy. It is a well-known city of ancient dagobas in Sri Lanka's medieval capital (11th - 12th Century AD), beautiful parks, moonstones, stunningly beautiful statues and massive buildings.

The Lotus Bath, The majestic King's Council Chamber, the Lanka Thilaka Viharaya, the statue of the great king polonnaruwa, Parakramabahu and the Gal Viharaya (rock temple), are a memorable of this capital's sights. The Sea of Parakrama - a vast 12th century man-made reservoir dominates the city. Although it is nearly 1000 years old, it is much younger than Anuradhapura, and in much better repair. Moreover, the monuments here are located in a more compact area, and their development is easier to follow
