This city is located nearby Islamabad which is the capital city of Pakistan. To state its coordinates precisely, it is situated within the Potwar Plateau. This region is highly significant because Pakistan Armed Forces military headquarters are based here and also Rawalpindi served as the country’s capital back in 1960’s when Islamabad was under construction.

Prehistoric Soanian culture was quite evident here and it also has a variety of markets, parks etc. which serve as an attraction for both local and international tourists. The establishment of a number of industries and factories also contribute to its fame.

Rawalpindi better known as Pindi has a rather extensive history. It is believed that 3000 years ago, some cultures emerged on this plateau. Remains and fossils found by archaeologists indicate that A Buddhist foundation existed here. The time period is estimated to match that of the civilizations of Taxila and Vedix. Taxila, a nearby town, is listed down in the Guinness Book of World Records because of Takshashila University which is known to be the world’s oldest university.

Architectural wonders of Rawalpindi include Purana Qil'aa which means The old fort, Bagh Sardaran (Gardens of the Chief) and Haveli Sujaan Sigh which has been left behind by this area’s Sikh Nawabs. The building has now been transformed into Fatima Jinnah University for Women. Other buildings left by their ancestors include Jain Temple Gordon College which was an institute for higher education back in the British Rule. Last but not the least is Jain Mandir which has added its share in increasing Rawalpindi’s value among others.

It is a region-wide symbol of progress, innovation and architectural marvel. Combining a rich history, the confluence of many a civilization and temperate climate, Islamabad - the capital city of Pakistan, is one of the most beautiful cities in the South Asian region. Wide, tree-lined streets adorn the various sectors and zones of the city, making it accessible and spectacular.

Administratively, the city is located within the Islamabad Capital Territory, which is federally controlled, even though historically Islamabad has been a part of the Punjab province; more specifically the Potohar Plateau. A meticulously planned city by renowned town planners Doxiadis Associates, Islamabad is the fastest growing city in terms of population, economy and urban development. As this trend continues, the city is shedding its reputation as a city without character, and is fast becoming truly metropolitan.
