    Despite running several leagues behind capital Rome in the tourism stakes, visitors quickly discover that Milan has more than enough to offer in its own right. A real fashion capital, you’ll find streets adorned not only with classic architecture, but also with Prada, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana, who – amongst numerous others – have made their home amongst the city’s extremely fashionable Golden Quad.

    In fact, fashion, finance (Milan is Italy’s economic centre) and the world-class local football are all but religions here. There’s no better way to spend an evening than watching the flares light up the passionate crowd at the San Siro (home to both AC and Inter Milan, two of the best club soccer teams in Europe); take a chilled out afternoon waiting for the carnage to unfold by heading for the canal-side cafes in Navigli, strolling around with a cone full of the world’s most sumptuous ‘gelato’ (ice cream), or hunting the numerous second hand stores that seduce passing tourists with affordable selections of last years range.

    The Teatro Alla Scala is perhaps Milan’s must see tourist site, the symbolic home of an impressive opera scene, while the pointy, gothic splendor of the Duomo Cathedral and its surrounding square captivates, too. Then there’s the heavily fortified walls of the Castello Sforzesco to drift around, or an impressive selection of city centre gardens in which to slurp your take-out espresso. In amongst it all, you can grab a quick viewing of Leonardo Da Vinci’s the last supper, too.

    Above all the sites, though, you’ll want to sample Milan’s atmospheric soul. Head along to a lengthy early-evening drinking session and throw back liquor with the locals while snacking on succulent bar snacks, or enjoying the slowed down street scenes of sunny August, when half the shops shut and the other half slow to an intensely casual snails pace.

    It’s all fascinatingly different and enticing. Welcome to the most fashionable part of the world’s most fashionable country. Dress up, strut about, and don’t forget to accessorize. You’re going to love it.
