    Lausanne suffered from many devastating medieval fires, and is the last city in Europe to keep alive the tradition of the nightwatch.

    • Leysin

      Leysin is situated at a height of 1200m in the Vaud Alps. It is at the foot of the Tour d'Aï. It is located especially for the views of Diablerets, Dents du Midi, Mont Blanc and over the Rhine Plain.

      Skiing and snowboarding is extremely popular here in winter, but it the town also a centre for climbing, paragliding, hiking, and general alpine recreation.

      It is also an International Education Centre and popular on the congress circuit. It is an ideal place to relax in a tranquil and scenic location.

      It is also the spiritual home of The International School of Mountaineering which was founded by Jon Harlin in the mid 60s, althogh it originally included Modern Mountaineering in the title. Many great climbers from the 'golden era' of climbing were instructors including Dougal Haston who later took over running the school when Harlin died on The Eiger. Courses are still run in Leysin with many other international schools from particularly the UK and US making use of the area.

      At this time Club Vagabond was in it's heyday with great luminaries of this climbing scene such as Chris Bonnington, Mick Burke and Nick Estcourt frequenting the famous club on various occasions.

      The town is accessible by train from nearby Aigle, which is home to World-Cycling-Association (UCI) or road via Le Sepey. Although the region is famed for mountain sports, other less tasking sports are also well catered for such as cycling and toboggan.

      It is also home to a number of international events.
