  • Overview You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove
Elefsina (22km or 13 miles from Athens), is the site of the temple of the earth goddess Demeter, and the ruins of the former cult centre of the Mysteries of Eleusis.
  • Getting there? You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove
From Athens as you proceed on the main Corinth road past heavy industry and oil refineries, you’ll probably find it hard to imagine that this was Attica’s most fertile area in classical times. Go past Skaramangas with its enormous shipyards and you will get there.
  • History You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove

At least 3,500 years ago, Eleusis was sacred shrine, and not until AD 395, when the pagan gods were banned, did the sanctuary lose its significance.

The Mysteries were remembered every year with a major procession along the Sacred Way between Elcusis and the Athens Acropolis.

Secrecy shrouded the Mysteries, but it is thought that initiates had to swear not to reveal the secrets of fertility and life after death. Aeschylus, the tragedian from Eleusis (525-456 BC), was just about executed when it was suspected that he had given away some of the Mysteries in one of his plays.

Despite its industrial surroundings, the Elusis Museum is worth visit.

    • Daphni Monastery
It’s worth putting up with the 10km (6 miles) of dreary scenery from the centre of Athens to reach the 11th-century Byzantine monastery at Daphni (Dafni), celebrated for its mosaics. Two enormous cypresses and an olive tree mark the entrance in a tall wall.

Nothing in Western art will prepare you for the stupendous Christ Pantocrator in the dome – to be viewed, as the artists intended, from the entrance. The other mosaics in the church are also worth lingering over (binoculars help in studying details). Look particularly for the one depicting the crucifixion, with its moving portrayal of the Virgin Mary’s grief. Though the monastery is no longer inhabited, an autumn wine festival is held in the grounds.
