      • Daphni Monastery
It’s worth putting up with the 10km (6 miles) of dreary scenery from the centre of Athens to reach the 11th-century Byzantine monastery at Daphni (Dafni), celebrated for its mosaics. Two enormous cypresses and an olive tree mark the entrance in a tall wall.

Nothing in Western art will prepare you for the stupendous Christ Pantocrator in the dome – to be viewed, as the artists intended, from the entrance. The other mosaics in the church are also worth lingering over (binoculars help in studying details). Look particularly for the one depicting the crucifixion, with its moving portrayal of the Virgin Mary’s grief. Though the monastery is no longer inhabited, an autumn wine festival is held in the grounds.

In an adjoining room you’ll find the marble remnants of the massive Kallithea monument.

Lying to the west of the Agora, along Ermou Street, is the ancient cemetery Keramikos. Off the beaten tourist track, you can explore the extensive ruins and sculpted tombs in relative peace.

This was the burial site of important Athenians, and the collection of rich jewellery, gold, glass and ceramics found in their graves, dating back to the 7th century BC, indicates their statues.

These items are on display in the cemetery’s small museum, which with its strikingly beautiful painted vessels and unusual offering channels and figurines is a real gem for pottery lovers.

        • Its a must to come in the sacred city of Elefsis. The museum of Elefsis will thrill you with its collection. You need a guide to show the exhibits or do your homework with a good book on the historyx of Elefsis. The museum lacks adequate experienced personnel.Walk around the old ruins and you travelled back to a civilization that passed away but gave it's lights to Europe and all people that believe not only in human hedonists but to spirit culture freedom brotherhood and equality.that's the meaning of Elefsisinian mysteries. i Q
