Praça do Comércio (also known as Terreiro do Paço) The most beautiful square in Lisbon, this harmonious space by the river is the perfect tribute to those who died in the earthquake of 1755.

The crashing of the lower part of the city allowed a reconstruction where the perfect geometry contrasts with the narrow, winding streets that survived in the surrounding hills. This area was occupied by the royal palaces, thus the old name still commonly used of "Terreiro do Paço".

Nowadays the surrounding buildings house part of the government. The balance of all the elements in the square is better seen if you arrive from the river. All the elements, including the statue of king's José I, date form the 18th century.

The only changes made in the square were pavements and... colors. Originally yellow, in 1910 the republicans decided to change it to pink. Recent analysis decided to return to the original yellow, and that's what is expecting you.

      • Lisbon
Lisbon is like a city on display, draped across the hillsides above the Rio Tejo, and a beautiful display it is, too. Dig deeper into Portugal’s capital, though, and you’ll quickly find that it’s unpretentious about its beauty; welcoming and lively, yet still hiding sumptuous corners unchanged since the 1930s, and brimming with the kind of charm that had you traveling in the first place.

It might have tinges of the old and antiquated – and alluring ones at that – but part of Lisbon are extremely up to the minute. The MUDE Fashion and Design museum will take fashionistas through the latest of the minute styles, while there’s plenty in the way of modern art, art deco and gorgeous fusion cuisine to track down, too.

The old parts of the city, though, are very much as they’ve always been, with tables set out on cobbled back streets serving olives and local wine, and the same rustic, about-to-break trams winding through the streets that have been there for decades. The historical sights haven’t changed much, either. Most of them sit at the top of the many hills, giving spectacular views from the undulating peaks down to the shimmering coastline.

The Belem Tower is the city’s iconic sight, a towering seaside turret that from certain angles looks like it’s disconnected from the shore altogether. The Jeronimos Monastery was built in the 16th century to commemorate Vasco De Gama’s departure for India, and is now a world heritage monument coated in sculpture and hosting the explorer’s tomb. Look up, and you can hardly miss the Castle of St. George, which dates back in parts to the 6th century, and – though very peaceful now – still hosts cannons, a guarding moat and a full on multimedia exhibition to help you understand it all.

Don’t leave Lisbon, though, without taking a lengthy stroll around and finding out just what the city is about for yourself. Grab a jar of olives and some freshly baked bread, and drift around the back alleys, stopping for coffee (or Golao) or to explore a tiny local store. Lisbon, you see, is a city that’s about far more than its sights.

        • First attraction of Lisbon. Very beautiful view from every single corner of it. River view and gate as well. Good for family trip as well. Riverside is awesome what I said and what I not. In my view better to watch personal with family or friends. Bus, trams Servise are very punctual. ONE thing please note BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS Specially on route no 28. Ladies also involve in it. Specially old Lisbon part.
        • Big and very popular public square at the river Tagus. Surrounded from three sides by the plaza construction including the arch gateway and many historical statues. This plaza square is full of restaurants and cafes. It's a great place for walking both during the day and night. The place is usually windy and it gets slightly cold during the night. Definitely deserves a couple of hours!
        • Lovely square, clean. Right at the metro station. Great for the ferry and also good to then work across to the Se and then through the little Alfama streets. There are many little cafes etc en route to ensure you can keep your strength up....
        • Very wide and full of tourists, this square marks a place of ancient trades and Lisbon's entry port of goods. Today its beautiful marble floor is surrounded by good restaurants, cafes and museums, making it a special place to relax after (or during) a day of strolling through old city's streets. From the edge of the market place, by the Tagus river, you can see the intense flow of merchant ships and a bit far away the bridge "25 de abril" another landmark in Lisbon.
        • Central square of Lisbon with an amazing view over the Tejo River and its estuary. Since its renovation, a lot of emerging restaurants and bars opened as the main square is now traffic closed. A wide view of the south margin and both bridges connecting Lisbon to the south margin of the river. Great place to look for the sunset and some drinks before dinner.
        • We totally enjoyed sitting down with a bottle of wine and watching a live World Cup soccer match with thousands of fans of all ages. Large police presence which made it all the more comfortable to be part of. Great atmosphere, and what a special unique experience to be able to Witness. There's all kinds of stores and restaurants with a wide variety of options for you.
        • Very fantastic place. You feel you are in the Roman Empire. The place are very big and detailed. You need more than 3 or 4 hours to finish looking. There are just one bathroom if it was closed no other place to go. It is very pretty From inside.
        • The main square of old town Lisbon. Beautiful architecture But really populated. In surroundings there are many restaurants and places where to have drink.
        • Beautiful setting. Has been home to the fan park for the World Cup which have a lovely backdrop. Excellent atmosphere to watch the football.
        • A beautiful spot in Lisbon, you can't go away without seeing this square. Lots of cafes and restaurants facing the square, which opens towards the river, walking through it enjoying the sunshine is a must when going there in spring. Plus, the arch is really beautiful and the atmosphere very original with the trams passing near the square!
