An archipelago off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar as a whole is a grouping of Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island, and a variety of other smaller islands that create the perfect environment for an enchanting vacation away from the burdens of the more crowded island destinations. This is a distinctly different feel than one would get visiting the Caribbean. Here, the mixture of Moorish, Indian, African, and Middle Eastern traditions and architecture have created a mystical sense of island living that feels like it was torn right out of the pages of a Arabian Nights. And while there are plenty of beaches here waiting for you to sink your toes into their soft, white sands, the true allure of Zanzibar is the history and the exploration that the islands offer.

The ancient Persians were the first to settle here, using Zanzibar Island itself because of the natural harbor as a stopping-off point when trading between India, the Middle East, and Africa. Then, over time, it came under the control of the Portuguese Empire, eventually falling under the rule of the Sultanate of Oman, which was when the plantations first began to spring up and the spices grown which would eventually become popular enough that the islands became known as The Spice Islands. The British eventually took control until Zanzibar won its independence in 1963. It is this history which has shaped sections of Zanzibar Island into what is now known as Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that blends all the elements of the past together into a labyrinth of alleys, shops, open markets, and historical buildings.

Beyond that, the islands themselves await. Places like Jozani Forest, complete with animals like the Zanzibar leopard or the Red Colobus monkeys, or the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre and the Jozani National Park. Between the beaches, the ancient history of the harbor town, and the natural beauty of the surrounding islands, Zanzibar is a destination that literally screams exotic with every fiber of its being.

      • Stone Town

Stone Town is the old area of Zanzibar City, also called as Mji Mkongwe (Swahili for "old town"), the main city of Zanzibar, in Tanzania, as opposed to Ng'ambo (Swahili for 'the other side'). It is located on the western coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. Former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, and flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century, it retained its importance as the main city of Zanzibar during the period of the British protectorate. When Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined each other to form the United Republic of Tanzania, Zanzibar kept a semi-autonomous status, with Stone Town as its local government seat.

Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, with a unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. For this reason, the town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Due to its heritage, Stone Town is also a major visitor attraction in Tanzania, and a large part of its economy depends on tourism-related activities.

Stone Town is located roughly in the middle of the west coast of Unguja, on a small promontory protruding into the Zanzibar Channel. The closest major settlement on the Tanzanian coast, opposite to Stone Town, is Bagamoyo (to the south-west). Stone Town is part of Zanzibar City, that also comprises the "New City" of Ng'ambo ("the Other Side"), which mostly extends in the interior of Unguja to the south-east. The ideal dividing line between Stone Town and Ng'ambo is Creek Road.

      • Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo is one of the more historic cities on the East African coast. It acted as both an ivory and slave trade port and boasts great history and many interesting sites, not to mention beautiful beaches. Traditional sail boats (dhows) are built in Bagamoyo and it's a large fishing area as well.

As most of the areas of Tanzania, Bagamoyo holds true in that both the town and her people are beautiful and inviting. There are many sites to visit around town that will please anyone interested in history to spectacular views and friendly locals. It's about an hour north of Dar Es Salaam (as the daladala travels) and is well worth the time and effort to visit.
