  • Overview You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove

This windswept promontory lies 70km (43km) south of Athens and is crowned by the Temple of Poseidon.

From this southernmost point on the mainland you can see the Saronic Gulf, the Aegean Sea, several islands and what is arguably the most beautiful sunset or sunrise in Attica.

  • Getting there? You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove
This is a popular and excursion from Athens and takes from 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours each way, depending on the traffic.

Along the winding coastal highway you’ll find good, sandy beaches and spectacular seascapes, especially over the last 12km (7 miles). You can go by local bus, rented car or organized tour. Unless you opt for the latter, the best times to visit are sunrise and sunset.

If you can avoid the afternoon hours when the tour buses descend, you may feel a sense of the inspiration like Lord Byron did on "Sunium’s marbled steep".
  • The tragedy of King Aegeus You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove
According to legend, every nine years it was an obligation of the Athenians to send seven youth and seven maidens to Crete to be eaten by the dreaded Minotaur.

Theseus set out for the island on a ship with black sails to slay the monster, while his father, King Aegeus, gazed upon the sea, watching for his son’s return. If Theseus escaped alive, he was to hoist the white sails of victory for his father to see.

With his mission successfully accomplished, Theseus sailed back to Athens, but in his euphoria forgot to change the sails.

So it was that when the black sails of death came into sight, the grief-stricken King, believing his son to be dead, threw himself off the precipice at Sounion, and the sea was thereafter called the Aegean.

      • Temple Of Poseidon
The temple was built of Parian marble around 444 BC. Of its original 34 Doric columns, only 15 still stand – Lord Byron carved his name on one of them – while the salty sea wind has eaten away at the lonic frieze depicting mythical battles.

There’s a beach resort on the shore, below one side of the precipice: on the other is a sheer 60m (197ft) drop.

      • Vouliagmeni Beach

The resort of Vouliagmeni is an upmarket place, with a yacht club and deluxe hotel complex. Also here is a public beach with water-skiing facilities, and you can charter a fishing caique at the marina. The town is named after a sulphur-springs lake, which has been converted into a spa, where the warm, lime-coloured waters are supposed to be good for muscular aches and skin ailments.

Between the lake and Varkiza you’ll find parking niches dotted along the highway from where you can climb down to the scores of rocky covelets which decorate the coastline. This coastal stretch is not recommended for either children or poor swimmers, but the lovely beach at Varkiza, with its pistachio trees growing almost to the shore, is perfectly safe.

      • Voula

20km/12 miles from Athens has a National Tourist Organisation (EOT) beach, less luxurious than say Astir beach but well run and with a lovely view over the bay.

It’s also much quieter than Astir.
