Users Assigned: KazmiKnown by many as the Jerusalem of Europe due to the religious diversity present within the city, and one of the most well-known names in Europe because of the tragedies during the mid-90s, Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nestled in the Sarajevo Valley on the Miljacka River and surrounded by the beauty of the Dinaric Alps, Sarajevo stands as one of those places with a history tainted by rivers of blood, a city of great beauty whose people have been forced to live through atrocities that no man, woman, or child should ever be forced to witness. Despite the sufferings of its people, Sarajevo has emerged in the 21st century as a proud city, rebuilding and restoring to her former glory, and it is now listed as one of the top destinations for visitors to Europe.
Sarajevo is packed with historical, architectural, cultural, and religious histories, enough to keep even the most avid scholar busy for months. From the cobbled streets, mosques, and Oriental influences in the architecture at the heart of the Old City you can get just a brief glimpse of how important this city has been over the years as a meeting point between the East and West. This is also one of the few places in the world where you can actually walk past a Catholic church, Orthodox church, Synagogue, and mosque all at the same time, leading to the city’s nickname.
Beyond the museums and ancient architecture of the city, showcasing its history over the years, the surrounding countryside is rolling hills, forests, mountains, and the river, making for one of the most beautiful places in the entire country.
