Athens’ port Piraeus is the third-largest in the Mediterranean) after Marseilles and Genoa). With nearly a million inhabitants, upmarket marinas, pretty tavernas and a vibrant nightlife, it is a city in its own right, just as it has been since ancient times.

Today the world of seamen’s cafes and ladies of the night’ made famous in Melina Mercouri’s Never on Sunday has been eclipsed by swish marble banks and shipping offices. Piraeus is no quaint fishing town, but a working port with busy streets radiating out from its three natural harbours.

The main port – or Great Harbour – serves international shipping vessels, cruise liners and the major inter-island ferries. From here into central Athens, or wander through the colourful market behind the town hall. Many island people come just to shop in this boisterous bazaar, turn around and catch the next ferry home – without a nod at the rest of Piraeus or Athens over the hill.

The metro trip to Piraeus takes about 25 minutes from central Athens; you can also go by bus from Syntagma and Omonia Squares. Harbor-hopping is easiest by taxi, though drivers will charge you plenty for the privilege and claim ‘port surcharge’ when you protest

    • Daphni Monastery
It’s worth putting up with the 10km (6 miles) of dreary scenery from the centre of Athens to reach the 11th-century Byzantine monastery at Daphni (Dafni), celebrated for its mosaics. Two enormous cypresses and an olive tree mark the entrance in a tall wall.

Nothing in Western art will prepare you for the stupendous Christ Pantocrator in the dome – to be viewed, as the artists intended, from the entrance. The other mosaics in the church are also worth lingering over (binoculars help in studying details). Look particularly for the one depicting the crucifixion, with its moving portrayal of the Virgin Mary’s grief. Though the monastery is no longer inhabited, an autumn wine festival is held in the grounds.

    • Keramikos Archaeological Site

Lying to the west of the Agora, along Ermou Street, is the ancient cemetery Keramikos. Off the beaten tourist track, you can explore the extensive ruins and sculpted tombs in relative peace.

This was the burial site of important Athenians, and the collection of rich jewellery, gold, glass and ceramics found in their graves, dating back to the 7th century BC, indicates their statues.

These items are on display in the cemetery’s small museum, which with its strikingly beautiful painted vessels and unusual offering channels and figurines is a real gem for pottery lovers.

The present name honour Antiochos Philopappos, a Syrian prince who served as Roman consul and Athen’s benefactor in the 2nd century AD. The marble monument on the crest was erected in his memory.

Once sacred, always strategic, this hill is an obligatory stop for camera enthusiasts: there’s a superb view both of the Acropolis and Athens, sloping down to the Bay of Phaleron and Piraeus harbor. It also offers a peaceful respite from the noise of the city; there’s a café halfway up the hill.
