A massive country of geographical diversity with some of the most amazing eco-tourism on the planet and a vast array of historical and cultural artifacts and cities as the center of the ancient Inca Empire, the country is one of the most talked-about destinations in South America. From the coastal deserts to the steamy interior of the rain forests that make up the Amazon basin, to the heights of the snow-capped Andes Mountains, Peru is a jaw-dropping experience, regardless of which part of the country you happen to choose for your adventure destination.
Visitors looking to explore current Peruvian culture can stick to the main cities like Lima with her fevered pitch of night-life mixed with colonial architecture and history, or Ayacucho, a mountainous town full of ruins, museums, and local cultural festivals and folklore. Visit the ancient tombs of Chiclayo or enjoy the beaches of Mancora, with its year-round tropical temperature and vibe. Or, if you happen to be someone who enjoys the ancient cultures, get out into the heart of the country, and experience the ancient Incan Empire that roamed these lands millennia ago.
One of the most epic ruins on the planet is the ancient city of Machu Picchu. Located near the city of Cuzco, and undiscovered until the 20th century, this is a must-see for any visitor to Peru. A UNESCO World Heritage site, located at the end of the most popular foot patch in South America, The Inca Trail, the city sits a thousand feet above the Urubamba River, and when combined with the golden splendor of Cuzco, which was the ancient capital of the Incan Empire, makes for the ultimate Peruvian adventure and step back into history.
Hepatitis A and typhoid fever vaccinations are recommended, as well as yellow fever. Guard against mosquitoes, as malaria can be deadly. As a popular tourist destination, Peru is quite safe if the proper precautions are taken, and the major areas are easily traversed by first-time travelers.
