It is probably impossible to speak about Venice without uttering a sigh of pure indulgence, accompanied by a low whisper of, “Ah…Venice.” From the waterways, to the museums, to the churches and the sights and sounds such as the Rialto Market and the Rialto Bridge, Venice is a dizzying array of excitement, adventure, romance and Renaissance all wrapped up in one pretty little package, and has been inspiring artists from around the world for centuries.

The best time to come to Venice is in Fall or Spring. The summer months, not only bring droves of tourists, but the smell of the lagoons is often extremely potent. However, Venice is a must-see destination for any Italian trip. Sights like Saint Mark’s Basilica, the Correr Museum, or the world-famous clock tower of Torre dell’Orologio will leave you gasping in amazement; and floating down the canals in a gondola, is a memory that will not soon fade.

Venice is famous for its gondola rides. They are romantic, but quite expensive, due to their enduring popularity. A gondola ride that goes under the Bridge of Sighs is a must-do for lovers. It is said that if you kiss under the Bridge of Sighs, you will be in love forever.

If you have time and like to walk, let yourself get lost down the back alleys. After a few turns without the aid of a map, you will find yourself in the heart of the suburbs, experiencing parts of Venice that haven't seen a tourist in years. Getting lost is part of the adventure of wandering the maze of streets that is Venice.

Whilst here, don't be shy of using the Vaporetti; the water buses are a must for tourists wanting to explore the Venician Riviera. The Lido, a beautiful sandy esplanade, with two enormous public beachs at the nothern and southern end, is accessible by Vaporetti just off St Mark's Square.

The Lido is also home to the renowned Excelsior and Des Bains Hotels, the setting for Thomas Mann's novel 'Death in Venice', as well as, the world-famous Venice Film Festival (end Aug-mid Sept). From the Lido, you can travel by Vaporetti to several islands in the Venetian Lagoon, including the Island of Murano, where you can watch the glass-making of, and buy, the most exquisite jewelry, sculptures and vases.

A 20-30 minute train ride away from the main station in Venice, is the charming, historic town of Ravenna, providing plenty of cheaper, last minute accommodation, for all budgets, and a convenient daily commute route to Venice.
