      • Trieste
Trieste is a small city in the north of Italy close to the Slovenian border. It is a port town on the Adriatic Sea. Formerly part of Austria, it became part of Italy at the end of WWI.

A walk around the city reveals some Art Nouveau and neoclassical architecture along with other interesting sights. There are lots of main sights in Trieste including castles, churches, ancient roman arches, an ancient roman theater, monuments, gardens, caves and a few museums.

There are also nice beaches nearby with crystal clear waters. Trieste offers plenty of places to stay as well as an abundance of cafes to try. A walk to the cathedral will show great views of Trieste Bay and the town/harbour.

      • Ljubljana
The heart of scenic Slovenia, Ljubljana is a historic city dating back to the days when founder Jason is said to have fought and killed the resident dragon, now a symbol of the fantastically ornate city. Old Ljubljana in particular is something special, having somehow brushed aside Soviet influences and retained the fairytale monuments, bridges, fountains and old-world houses that dominated the city many years ago.

Aside from the dragon iconography, the ‘Three Bridges’ are the stand out attraction of Ljubljana, oddly built right next to each other downtown, and home to lavish statues of local poets. Just down the road is the inevitable dragon bridge (guarded by four large statues) and you’ll find the castle at the top of an extremely steep road nearby, too. Ljubljana Castle sits at the peak of a wooded hillside in the heart of the city, and inside you’ll find whitewashed buildings surrounding a sizeable courtyard and epic views of the city from the height of the tower.

The Square of the Republic is a spot close to the heart of Slovenes, as the corner of the capital where the country declared its independence from Yugoslavia back in the early 90s, and since then the parliament building and nude statues that surround the square have seen almost exclusively good: Slovenia’s economic development has been substantial, the EU have bought political stability and the tiny nation is quickly establishing itself on the international tourist map. The vibe of this lively city reflects the progress.

The fiercely nationalist museums make for a great insight into the local psyche, while those who prefer a bit of a messy night out will be pleased to find that the local nightlife still feels like a celebration. Of course, the city also makes for the perfect gateway into the rest of Slovenia, with all the extensive transport links you’d expect from a capital.

It might be a relatively small capital, but Ljubljana makes up for it in pure picturesque beauty, and leaves most of the increasing array of visiting tourists raving.

      • Koper

Koper, Slovenia's largest port is also the largest town on the Slovenian Adriatic coast. Places to see in Koper are Praetorian Palace formulated in Venetian Gothic approach that was made in the 15th century. Other attractions are Carmine Rotunda cathedral made in 12th century and St Nazarius church made in 14th century.

Praetor's Palace (Palazzo Pretorio) is the symbol of Koper. It is situated in the center of the old city on the south side of Glavni trg (Main Square), It was built in the 15th century and is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles.

The city Loža (loggia) stands on the north side of Glavni trg (Main Square), It was built in 1462 in Gothic style with five arches facing the square and four on the left side. The architects were Nicolà from Piran and Tomaso from Venice. Praetorian Palace is situated in Titov trg. This is the center of Old Koper. It has many interesting buildings in this area & it's closed to traffic as much of the Old Town in Koper. The southern boundary of the Old Town is marked by Vojkovo nabrezje and Pristaniska ulica, which form a kind of ring road, and the northern boundary is the industrial area of the modern docks. Pristaniska ulica runs along the sea front where there is a promenade, a marina, and some small parks.

The bus and railway stations are right next to each other.Getting around Koper is simplicity itself. You walk. Koper has enough charm of its own to warrant at least a day-trip, and its good transport links make it a good base to explore the surrounding area.

        • Fantastic place. The train inside the cave is already pretty impressive, then there's a walking tour inside while the guide is giving very interesting information about the formations. Feels completely different then any other place, it's massive and full of tiny fantastic details. A must if you are around. A bit expensive also.
        • The cave itself was incredible. However the tour was rushed, as the guide would power walk through the cave, and skipped most of the landmarks and points of interest (marked by audio guide numbers). Minimal info given. Then had 15 minutes of free time in the plainest part of the cave - of course because of the gift shop there. Animal section (paid separately) was under repairs, so half animals missing but wasn't told before buying ticket. As said, the cave was wonderful, but left with a sour taste due to price and quality of tour.
        • The place itself is stunning, marvellous. The whole service around is very poor. The guides just do not care, they run insanely and skip most of the "explanation point" which are obviously marked on the path. The only place where we were allowed to admire the cave was at the shopping area. Shame.
        • I heard this is the biggest cave in Europe, and the second biggest one in the world. It's so big that you take the train for a while to go inside. It was almost my first time to go into cave, and was awesome experience. The entrance fee was not cheap(I am a student, so can be more sensitive to the price though), but still worthy to pay. If you can go here, I would recommend to visit here.
        • Absolutely gorgeous cave beyond anything in the US and I've been to all the major commercial US caves. Excellent organization and tour. English guide was very good and answered all the questions. Sang a few phrases in Slovenian in the 'concert chamber'. Elegant voice and made the whole experience holy.
        • This is an incredible place! This is the nicest cave system I have seen that can be easily visited by anyone. To visit the caves, a tour is compulsory. It typically lasts 1-1.5 hours, although 2 hours are allocated. I strongly recommend checking the website in advance so you know when to get here. The tour starts and finishes with an impressive trip on a small train that gets you well inside the cave. Then, the tour proceeds on foot for about an hour. Now, the only problem is that there are plenty of tours in different languages going on at the same time, so that timings are strict and it is not possible to move about on your own. Nevertheless, that is the only reasonable way so that everyone can admire the caves. Notes: it can be chilly in the caves and moist, so I would recommend taking a jacket with you (even/especially in the summer). The walk is not very difficult and I think it is open to people with special requirements, but check in advance on the website to be sure. I would strongly recommend going to the toilet before/after the tour. However, should you need it when inside the caves, the only toilets are the train station. I am sure there must be shortcuts, but it is better if you ask the guide to go for it at either the start or finish of the tour.
        • Great and intresting place to visit. Staff is kind and serviceable. It has a restaurant, cafe and few shops, but it's a bit pricey.
        • Spectacular, awesome & much more, but be prepared for 2.5 km + of walking inderground, parents with infants & toddlers should take their pushchairs along.
        • incredible place! the tour last around 1.30h, half of it with a little train and half of it by foot. the temperature in the cave is always 10° and it's easy to get wet by some drops so you better bring a rain coat with you!
        • Fantastic cave. Take a tour. A bit expensive 23€. You start by 2 km with train then 2 km walk and train out again. Amazing views. Dress warm it's cold in the mountain.
        • If you have time, I would recommend visiting which will take you half of the day. Quite amazing how big and beautiful the nature is.
        • Well worth the touristy nature of the little train ride in. The cave is amazing and you have the choice of following a group or just lag behind to enjoy it by yourself.
        • Spectacular caves, really impressive. Lovely and cool inside, a fleece is recommended especially if you take the mini train tour (which was a lot of fun). Very interesting place with a lot of history, although I found the guides somewhat lacking when I went, they were students working summer jobs who weren't actually very knowledgeable about the place.
        • Spectacular and massive caves. A must do if you're in Slovenia. The cave system is 30km long. The walkways are unique as you don't slip irrespective of the angle of the walkway. Guides are funny and knowledgeable. The best part is an electric train takes you to the heart of the caves.
        • Huge cave with a nice train ride through it. You get to walk around after the ride and take photos for 30 minutes and get to see the newly discovered "human fish". Be sure to bring warm clothes with you as the temperatures in the cave is below 10 degrees Celsius all year round. Worthwhile trip but it is quite expensive.
        • A place you should absolutely visit in Slovenia. The train&foot tour in the cave will let you spend a couple of interesting hours. The cave animals area has not been really interesting, the nice thing were the historical visitor signatures on the wall (when this was allowed)
        • Nice tour. The caves themself are amazing, but the whole service around keeps asking for money and it's way too touristic for my taste. For 20€ (student discount) I expected something more than a ride on a train and 1h walk. You can find very similar things for more reasonable prices. I just saw the caves because the packages with the other attractions were very expensive and didn't seem to add much to the experience.
        • Very large cave with a nice and interesting tour. The tram brings you below the surface appr. 70m deep. Then you walk for about 1h through a romantically lit scenery. It's getting really, really cold so dress properly (I didn't ❄⛄)!
        • This is one of the best cave experiences we've had! (And we've visited many national park caves in the U.S.) The train ride allows you to see so much more than walking, but you still get to enjoy a wonderful walk through some amazing formations and learn about the cave from the guide. They also offer wool capes for €3.50 for those who don't have warm clothing (it gets quite cold, 6-10°C, and the air movement from the train ride can chill you quickly). We thought, from the road signs, it might be campy, but this was an amazing experience - don't miss it!
        • An excellent location. Very well maintained and organised. Our guide, Barbara, was very nice, patient and informative. While the floor is wet, it is not slippery, so don't worry. Also, Pro tip: the pictures of the cave come out better without flash. At least I think so. Also, please don't use flash, or you may be shamed by the guide :) , but not in a bad way. Will come again.
        • What an unexpected pleasure: the atmosphere and the grandeur are otherworldly. A natural wonder. The vast chambers are breathtaking. The train wending through old River channels, the accessible winding path and dramatic bridge, surreal and cathedral-like spaces lend themselves to an almost spiritual experience.
        • Beautiful cave. They take you by underground train a few kilometers into the cave, which already is breathtakingly beautiful, then you go on a guided tour through a section of the cave they say is the prettiest. Everything is electrically lit up (which at some point of the tour they turn off for a few seconds of course). The whole cave is awe inspiring.
        • It is an amazing cave. It is extremely beautiful and very well organized. The tour lasts for about 1 hour and a half. Take some warm clothes with you. God bless you!
        • Amazing. My first cave, and I enjoyed every second. Super organized. Granted, it's a very touristic place, but... on the other hand you won't have to worry about nothing, even with little kids.
        • The cave is without a doubt one of the most impressive and beautiful caves I have ever visited and are well worth a visit. However the tour you have to take to view the cave is extremely expensive and very badly organised. Our guide could not have been less enthusiastic about the tour which wasn't a great start. Tours for multiple languages take the same train into the cave, they are then supposed to follow the guide for their language, however this did not work when we visited, people got their tours mixed up and it was utter chaos. The tours go along a fairly narrow path which means people that are looking for their tour have to squeeze through many people. The groups per language are also too large, the guide rushes ahead and stops at certain points to explain features of the cave. However as the paths are narrow and people want to take pictures this does not really work with huge groups. In our case we only saw the guide twice as they do not stop and wait till everyone has caught up. In the two cases we managed to listen to the guide maybe 1/3 of the group had made it to the place she was speaking with the rest still trailing behind. So despite paying a lot of money don't expect to get much information as the guides just rush through the cave. In conclusion the cave is worth a visit, however don't expect much from the tour.
        • The place itself is breathtaking, the infrastructure is perfect (even a stroller or a wheelchair could roll along), the lighting is beautiful and artistic. The tour is, however, rushed and hurried beyond belief. The guides were pushing us constantly even when we just stopped to take in the scenery. A few quick tips, if you are opting for the audio guide, it is perfectly serviceable to have just one device per group, since the talk is very verbose and long. Parking is 5 Euro per day, toilet is free, food is expensive, and the souvenirs cost the same at every vendor.
        • It's a nice trip, worth doing for your first or only trip to Slovenia. It's quite cool, around 10 deg all the time and you will be dripped on regularly so beware on that one. A little pricey but hey it goes towards up keep etc. We're both glad to have had the experience 👌👍
        • The whole complex is really good. BUT!!! I had 2 problems with the facility. 1 - The whole cave visiting is a rush. You cannot stop for a minute because the next group leader push you. 2 - They take a photo from every visitor and PRINT IT ALL! Approximately 5% sold at the end of the cave and all the rest goes to the bin! It is the opposite of environmental protection!!!
        • Stunning showcave. Pricey maybe, but you get a really good tour with an abundance of formations. Whisked 2km into the cave system on an electric train (keep your head down!) You then get a great walk round deep underground and chance to look at the formations with a knowledgeable guide. This is a must see attraction!
        • A great experience! We did the castle and cave combo pack. I've been to many caves across the world and this was probably my most enjoyable cave experience. The train ride that you start and end with is really enjoyable. The whole experience lasted about an hour and a half. I enjoyed every minute. Highly recommend. The castle is also pretty cool. I thought it was in front of the cave we visit but it was about a ten minute drive away. We were a little rushed even though it's self placed. We had a 1200 showtime for the cave. Show up ten minutes early for that. We missed our original ticket time at 10am but they luckily could reschedule it to 12.
        • This cave is beautiful. The train-ride into the center of the cave was wonderful and breezy. THE TOUR GUIDES WERE AWFUL. I visited the caves as part of a 40-person group, and we had an English-speaking guide. The group was too big and the walk ways were not wide enough that 75% of the time, I couldn't see our guide, never mind hear her. We were not given a chance to stop to enjoy the sights and snap some photographs. We were herded along like sheep. When we did manage to slow down and take some photographs, the next tour guide behind us (just steps away) would shout at us to stay with our group. The tour itself was not good. I wish that it was self-paced instead, since I couldn't hear anything anyways. At one point, after lagging behind to take some photos of some stunning rocks, the tour guide stuck out her staff to block the walk way and wouldn't allow us to pass and scolded us for falling behind our group and taking photographs. Just ridiculous.
        • We really loved the cave. The tour inside is really good and you just can't understand the size of this cave. It's really amazing. I would recommend to do only the cave tour. The other exhibits are not that great and are a waist of money.
        • Caves in general have always a particular charm. Ticket cost 18€ for an adult, guided tour takes 1,30 hour, you go in and out with a train! Is an interesting experience... temperature is 10degrees!!!!
        • I wish my camera was better at capturing the inside of the cave. There are always lots of visitors here, so you're going to have to stand in line, unless you make proper reservations. The visit starts with a train ride, followed by a walk with a tour guide and you exit again by train ride. You're also able to take a look at the biggest cave dwelling creature, just don't flash it with your camera.
        • Great cave experience. Well suited for all ages as walking is quite limited. A small underground train takes you into and out of the cave. The English of the tour guides is excellent.
        • A must see!! Descriptions do not cover it. Until I was there I didn't appreciate the magnitude or the magnificence. And they've discovered that it's even longer than anyone anticipated. Got to go!!
        • A truly spectacular gem if you are into exploring the subterranean world. As you ride the train you enter deeper and deeper into the cave system. It just seems to never end but its amazing. Haven't been here since my childhood and well worth the high entry fee. However I was surprised how disorganized the whole affair was. Instead of having clear sections for different language tours before entry into the tunnel we were just left to find our own guide. We only saw the large Italian group with the Italian flag but we struggled to find the English group. Even after finding them the guide disappeared and we were left at the train end station to fend for ourselves. Just pure chaos. Badly organized. I know this worked much better when I was there in my youth. Still worth the visit but perhaps go for the self guided tour and pay extra for the little tour gadget.
        • Amazing Cave Excellent cave with breathtaking views. There are big parkings to park your car. The tickets are around 25 euro. They get you in the cave with a small train, and after that there is nice half hour walk deep inside the cave. At all the time there is a guide with the group who will answer all of your questions. Highly recommended, must see before you die :)
        • Loved this - always great getting underground These caves are incredible and the tour was excellent. You start off with a 15 min train journey that stops well inside the cave in a huge cavern. From there you walk through the cave system and see some incredible structures. The WWII history is also facinating.
        • There is really a magical atmosphere inside this cave, it feels like being on another planet, it's unbelievable what the nature can do. Some limestone formations are as old as 600.000 years. The visit lasts almost 2 hours and is divided into 3 parts: the first and the third are made by train and are 2 km long, while the central part is made on foot and is 1 km long. The cave is 24 km long as a whole but only 5 are open to public. The guide that led our group was very fun and made our experience great. Combined ticket with Predjama Castle costs 35€ but it is worth it.
        • A great underground experience. Travelling back and firth with a small open train. Bearable cold inside the stalactite cave. Beautiful scenery very recommended. Pay attention to buy tickets at the counters before the entry line.
        • Very touristic, but for a reason. There's even a little train you ride that takes you right into the heart of the caves. It's even more beautiful at Christmas, when the have coloured lights in the caves. Highly recommended - although if you're interested in something a little more raw, I would suggest you check out Škocjanske Jame.
        • This network of caves is truly mind blowing. They show us 5 km of the 23 km network during the 1.5 hour tour. The 10 mins train ride into the cave is a comfortable and amazing in itself. The guides speak good variety of languages. They could do better crowd control - our group was about 50 and they other was just about 15 - both work English speaking guides. One most consider going into the interactive museum as well. The food in the restaurant is good enough. The staff are friendly.
        • 24km long! But you travel 4km by small train and walk 1km in large chambers with amazing cave architecture! A professional tour for about 2 hours. Walkway wet so wear sturdy shoes. If you have a prepaid ticket you must exchange it for the barcodes ticket at the office. A lovely restaurant too. A memorable visit.
        • Really nice cave, there was a lot to see. The guides were really friendly and you can asked then so good as everything. I liked it a lot and would definitely come back if i could. I recommend this to tourist if you are on a trip in slovinia and the price is worth it.
        • The visit starts by long ride on a cave train-such a nice experience! Cave is beautiful and audioguides are interesting, we even saw a special cave animal which only lives here! It is well worth of visit but expect crowds of tourists even out of the season
        • Absolutely amazing. It's like the Grand Canyon but inside out. The train ride was fun too, but watch your heads. Listen to the safety instructions folks. And get ready to hike up slippery slopes and climb down them too. And it''d have been perfect if the guide went a little slower and us at the back could hear better, especially when the group is like 60+ in size.
        • One must visit! We were first not sure, if we should visit this place since tickets were 26 Euro ( other options also available) but it turned out be a great experience. I would recommend all to visit this place. They have an aqauriam too but it was not that interesting.
        • Among the best caves I've ever visited, this one worth completely the visit, even if on certain times is really crowded. In the entrance price is included the trip on the internal train, which will take you in the inner part of the structure and will take you out at the end of the tour. Really amazing structures, and plus you'll see the "human fish". Just the parking price, 5euro per car, no matter how long is your staying, feels a bit overstepping.
        • Stunning cave, huge and with a wide variety of underground structures of all shapes and sizes. There is a train ride into and out of the cave, but the best part is done on foot. The most visited tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of largest caves in Europe. On peak days you need to reserve your tickets in advance or take a guided tour from Ljubljana.
        • Fantastic caves with very good tourist support. The visit to the caves begins with a train ride (5-10 minute duration) followed by a walk along the paths. You can have an audio-guide or follow a guide (Slovenian, English, Italian, and two other languages) that explains the main features of the cave. They have a small aquarium inside the cave where you can see some cave salamanders. If you want to see more animals, they have a Vivarium. Definitely it's worth a visit.
        • Amazing place! Definitely worth of seeing. Have good shoes and warm clothes. Tickets are a bit expansive, it makes sense to buy combined ticket for the exhibitions and close by castle, too. Prepare to queue, or buy your tickets beforehand online.
        • At Postojna Caves organization is optimum. Personnel is available at the entrance and at the ticket box to explain you the different possibilities you have for your visit. We liked the caves but in particular the guide, lovely and prepared. A guide is available for each of the following languages: Italian, English, French, German, Slovenian, Spanish etc. There are many cafes where you can have lunch suitable to the different requirements. Around you find a nice park where you can sit and rest. It's worth going
        • Cave was huge and interesting. Great formations and variety. Tour was a total of 1.5 hours. 10 minutes on electric train going about 2km. Then 1 hour of walking for about 1km, then back on the train to the surface again. The cave has been very modified and seems to crank through a lot of people. Couldn't help but wonder how badly this has all impacted the ecosystem and cave itself. Have been to other caves and caverns where far more care has been taken to minimize the impact of humans. Among the train, underground concerts, and generally altered cave itself, it made me feel sad for the cave ecosystem and sorry I was part of it.
        • Awesome! Simply wonderful! The train takes you about 2 kilometres into the cave, then there is a one and a half kilometre walk where the guide stops periodically to provide information and point out features of the cave. The only thing that would have made it better was a slower pace so we could have had more time to appreciate the amazing formations.
        • One of those things you have to see, but the place is so touristy, it's hard to enjoy it. It's definitely impressive and the guided tour is informative but the masses of people and ambiance make you feel like you're on a Universal Studios tour rather than a nature tour. (Outrageous price and all.) Definitely skip the museum and the cave with animals. Hugely disappointing. Kids will like it and as I said you kind of have to go but it's not for nature lovers.
        • Highly recommend visiting here. The tours take about 1.5 hours, 30 minutes on a train and 1 hour of walking. It is chilly in the caves so dress in layers. Wear non-slip shoes as well because the walking paths get a bit damp. Be aware the tours leave at certain times, so we arrived at 4 but had to wait until 5 for the next tour. There is a small parking lot nearby, I think we paid about 5 Euro to park for 3ish hours.
        • This cave was huge! It was so fun to ride the train around it and they had Christmas lights on in the cave when we went through. Or tour guide was nice and knowledgeable when someone asked a question. The groups were large however the price was cheap! Worth it!
        • Amazing experience.  The largest cave in Europe, breathtaking views inside. But the visitor experience is also great. 2 kilometre train ride into the heart of the cave, then a 1 kilometre walk, all over perfectly paved walkways, completely wheelchair accessible. All staff members speak multiple languages and are really friendly and helpful, not just the guides but also ticket takers, parking attendants etc. Super organisation.
        • What a wonderful natural attraction to visit. I have never seen anything like it. We were deep inside the caves and I never felt claustrophobic at all. It was chilly inside so bring a sweater. The walking inside was fairly easy, and the tour is offered in multiple languages. It was a remarkable experience and a must do if you are visiting Slovenia. Also this cave is home to the OLM, only place on earth to find them.
