It was noted back in 2004 that about 112,900 reside within Iringa which happens to be a city in Tanzania. Its name was originated from “Lilinga” which is a Hehe word and means “the fort”. Having a good industrialized sector which includes food processing and manufacturing industries is one of the reasons why it’s also known as Iringa region’s administrative capital. Other reasons may include the fact that it gets electricity easily from Mtera Dam, which is nearby. Iringa isn’t a major transport hub but it runs a bus and trucking service to areas like Mbeya, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Songea.
Iringa was originally established to serve as a defensive base that was to be operated by Chief Mkwawa against the rising lead of Hehe. Chief Mkwawa’s fort and his headquarters were designated in Kalenga’s village which wasn’t that far off. The town’s area covered a hill top area at the southern side of which the Ruaha River could be seen. Towards its north, the town continued along ridges and valleys. Areas surrounding the town have an altitude greater than 1550 meter which is above sea level respectively. During June, July and August, the town undergoes extremely low temperatures and nearly everything freezes.
The Tanzam Highway goes through the valley that underpasses the town The distance between the highway and Iringa is restricted by Dar es Salaam and is about 312 miles by the means of Morogoro, that is. About 20 km towards its southwest lies the Isimila Stone Age site. It holds archaeological antiques specifically stone instruments and which were used by humans that lived life 7000 years ago.
