• Dominica

  Dominica, more commonly known as the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a Caribbean island that has been labeled as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean”, due to its lush, tropical forests, the extensive natural parks, the plant and animal life, the mountain ranges, and the Boiling Lake, which is the second largest thermally actively in the world. While there are some coastal destinations on Dominica, the vast majority of the island is a treasure-trove of tropical forests and river systems combined with mountains, and otherwise.
  
  Dominica is the outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise. While the Cayman Islands and other Caribbean destinations provide ample beach-front activities that are superior to those offered on Dominica, the country is second to none when it comes to jungle adventures. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of diving or snorkeling opportunities off the coast, but rather that the majority of visitors who come to this island do so specifically because of the World Heritage sites and natural parks.
  
  English is the official language, although French is unofficial, which makes getting around a breeze for Western visitors. The cuisine is Creole in flavor, which has a certain kick to it that will leave your taste buds tingling long after the meal. Accommodations vary depending upon the city, and most people either start their trips in Roseau, the capital, where accommodations range from budget-oriented to beach-front villas. Alternatively, there are plenty of riverside lodges and mountain cottages and resorts throughout the national parks, allowing travelers ease-of-use regardless of where they happen to be on the island.
  
  There are over 300 miles of foot paths on Dominica, including the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a back-packers’ dream come true, and there are literally hundreds of trails to enjoy, ranging from simple beginner trails to more rugged paths winding up to the Boiling Lake and otherwise.
  
  The open air markets are very near the ship. Even with a good price dont forget to haggle for a better price.

  Worth checking out for the pizza and wine nights. Delivery makes ordering easy but more often than not the restaurant is packed; especially during the first weeks of the semester from the firsties. Are able to reserve the lower deck for private parties. It has a hot tub and really nice view of the city. Many of the staff are Ross spouses from the US, so one can expect timely and efficient service most nights.

  Sadly I was only there for a function. But Hans and his wife welcomed us with open arms! The breakfast and view was amazing! Definitely on my to visit list this time for a night or more!

  My husband and I stayed a week at Champs! wow it was fantastic. This is place where I'd give it 5 stars for hospitality, friendliness, fantastic views, great meals and good people all around. Llise helped us achieve many of our goals: directing us to Dr. Bertrum for bird and nature walks, Earl E. for a look at Dominican life as an artist, diving with JC at the fort and providing an atmosphere at Champs where we met many interesting people. We danced the night away on New years, played movie trivia on Taco Thursday and enjoyed a gourmet meal on Christmas eve. The hill up to Champs is challenging, (we did walk it and by the end of the week didn't need to stop to catch our breath, but…Llise provided us with transportation to the dive shop, and if possible and if available anywhere in the local area (or alternate arrangements were made) . Thank you for the great hospitality in Dominica.

  Hosts are awesome, but too many students from the local University flooding the bar/restaurant in the evening.
