With an evocative name prompting images amongst locals of dragons rising from its pristine waters, Halong Bay is infamously beautiful, but becoming more and more of a tourist trap. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself whipped around the bay at double quick time, with little chance to do more than glance out and get a quick eyeful of the best of the sights. It’s worth paying more to avoid this experience, as seeing Halong Bay the wrong way takes away the beauty of the place entirely.

If you want a truly memorable Halong Bay trip, best hop aboard an overnight ‘junk’, from where you can visit a host of islands, go cycling amongst the paddy fields, play with the local monkeys and take plenty of chances to jump in and swim in the tepid water. Meals are usually included, and with a night booked in advance, you can put a restriction on how early the dodgy boatsman can bring you back to shore. If you have a bit of cash to throw around, there are some other exceptional experiences, too, such as heading down into the impressive assortment of caves to be found on the islands, or even indulging in a surprisingly affordable helicopter trip over it all.

Many book their trips back in Hanoi, where you should be able to sort a two-day (one night) tour around the jutting islands and extensive bay for around $80, including a selection of food. If you get the right tour, the experience is a truly special one, with local cuisine, spectacular asides (be sure to kayak if you get the chance), and lush, towering islands that give a true sense of tropical paradise.

You have to pay to get in to Halong Bay, too, but all the tourist hassle is there for a reason: this genuinely is one of the most attractive corners of Viet Nam, and generally worth the hassle, though you will inevitably feel like a real package tourist strolling the golden beaches and hanging out on the boats. Not one for the purists, perhaps, but essential nonetheless.

One of the most beautiful destinations in the whole of Vietnam is Ha Long Bay. Located in the Quang Ninh province just off the South China Sea, Ha Long Bay derives its name from the thousands of limestone karsts and islands which rise from the waters, jutting upwards like the gnarled fingers of some great aquatic beast clutching at the sky. The legends say that years ago the gods sent a family of dragons to help the people defend against invaders, and the dragons spat out jade jewels which sunk into the bay to create the series of islands and karst formations, blocking the invaders from sailing in. And while the legends may be nothing more than just that, there is no doubt that the views seen in Ha Long Bay are such that they have inspired millions of visitors in their time, and it has been listed as a World Heritage site since 1994.

Today, Ha Long Bay is considered one of the most popular destinations in Vietnam so far as tourists are concerned. Unfortunately, it reeks of just that: tourism. While the area is stunning in terms of natural beauty, some of that is spoilt by the never-ending throngs of people and the fleet of diesel-powered junks (cheap imitations of the traditional Asian boats) that ferry people to and fro among the islands without any care for the environment, interested only in profiting as much as possible from the tourists. It is almost impossible to experience Ha Long Bay in an idyllic setting, but if you can handle the crowds and the very obvious tourist trap nature of the place, then it is well worth the trip. The best way to experience the bay if you are an adventurous sort is to rent your own kayak and find a secluded spot to relax, but other than that you can always rent a junk for a day cruise or even an overnight trip.

        • This place offers amazing views and some amazing things to do. Defiantly the most expensive place to visit in Vietnam even more than the cities. Hotels cost more, food is more and even “things to do” cost more. Most people appear to be internal tourists but some international ones too. Had a good time here but expect to spend more
        • There’s a reason why this place is a National Park. It’s so beautiful and goes on for miles and miles. I’ve never seen anything like Halong Bay before. There’s lots of coral, endless beaches and emerald green water. The only bad part is how much trash is in the water. It’s really sad how people can be so disrespectful to such a beautiful landscape
        • A breathtaking and beautiful place in vietnam. It took hours to get to this place and worth it. I enjoyed my day tour travel on this place plus the food from the ferry.
        • This is the most stunning place I have ever seen. Breath taking views (literally), especially during the sunset. The scenery would be rated as 5 stars however please be careful folks. I repeat, be careful when you in Halong Bay. We were hired private tour (private boat with only us, tour guide and crews) during our visit. Given that its a private tour, we leave our belongings on the lower deck while we enjoying the breathtaking views on the upper deck (the boat is moving) . However, we dint know that our money got stolen (we dint use money at all for the day trip because its a paid up tour) until we leave Halong Bay. The money was being stolen partially; its the experienced thief with clever act because you wont discover unless you take out your money and count on the spot. Report to police in Vietnam is another nightmare. We tried to report a police in Hanoi because we only discovered the incident on our way home. The police in Hanoi wont accept the case because they have to go through the hassles to call police in Hanoi to lodge report etc. They basically work with no computer and only an old desk and old building. Unless you pay them, else you can just forget about your money. Overall, Vietnam is a beautiful country however you do need to be alert with your belongings and shopping (advice to buy north face at authentic shop instead of buying at Vietnam, we also got cheated) when you are there.
        • It's a must visit place when u r at Vietnam. It's almost 2hrs drive from Hanoi. Contact hotel reception to book a day tour or something to Halong Bay. The operator picks u from the hotel and drops back. The tour starts in the morning after breakfast. After briefing at the pier at Halong Bay, the operator guides to the boat. They will arrange lunch on board. Then take u to fishing village, limestone cave, kayaking etc. And by night 8 will drop back to Hanoi
