Groningen is the capital of the province Groningen and with 182,000 residents by far the largest town in the North of the Netherlands. Groningen has one of the oldest and largest universities of the Netherlands and houses more than 40,000 students, so it is a very young and lively town. Because of these students it is a good place to party and to study (abroad)!

The main sites of Groningen are the main square (Grote Markt) and its surroundings, The Martini Tower, the canals and the Groninger Museum (the building on an artificial island is a work of art in itself). Groningen also houses one of the most beautiful buildings (according to a national competition) of The Netherlands: the Gasunie building. Also Station Groningen, dating from 1866 and just greatly renovated, is considered as a fantastic monument.

The cultural side of Groningen is also quite interesting. The Eurosonic festival in January is considered as one of the most important festivals to discover new music. The Noorderzon festival in August is a performing arts festival held in the Noorderplantsoen.

Furthermore the Bommend Berend day on August 28 is an important celebrating day for Groningen with fire works in the city park and all kind activities in the city center.
Since the city center is forbidden for cars, cycling is the easiest and most important way of transport. In 2002 Groningen was voted as biking city of the Netherlands. In 2005 and 2006 Groningen was elected best city center of the Netherlands.

Every year in October the run 4 mile of Groningen is helt.
