• Tahiti

  Tahiti is the largest and most heavily populated island in French Polynesia. It has a population of 150,000 out of the 220,000 in all of French Polynesia. The two islands, Tahiti Iti (Little Tahiti) and Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti) joined by isthmus is essentially Tahiti. The main town, Papeete, has a population on the order of 100,000. Papeete is a bustling city and traffic can be a bit of a snarl. Even where people are crowded together, they are warm and friendly.

  Nice clean airport. Pleasant staff. The food area has a good selection considering it is not a big airport, but pricey. There are rental car kiosk onsite. There is also a place to store your baggage if you need to. If you are flying out from New Zealand, and you are a smoker, on arrival duty free cigarettes are about 1/3 cost than if you purchased at Auckland airport, and you are allowed 1 carton per person, but if you are flying back to NZ, or Australia, remember they only allow 50 ciggies/person.

  Flights are on time, there's some food and even a lounge. But they could use a few more ceiling fans or A/C and more seating in the international terminal. The automatic process was a mess. Also no soap in the bathroom wasn't that great.

  On incoming, Immigration, and customs were quick. Money exchange was open when we arrived at 1:00am. New Zealand airline had excellent service. Domestic outgoing, Air Tahiti check in service was perfect; pleasant, helpful staff. Security was quick, and easy. For those traveling traveling from abroad, onto a domestic flight with a 10kg allowance of check in baggage, you can store excess baggage at the baggage storage office located at the airport. Restaurants are more expensive as with many airports, but if you have time, you can walk to the easy market supermarket, where you can buy sandwiches, cooked food, and cheaper bottled water...just walk to the street from the airport, and go left. There are car rentals located at the airport, which we have not tried. We tried the eco-car rental across the street, and will warn you to avoid it due to its lack of customer service...like a wolf in sheep clothing, appears ok, but will attack when you are not looking. Unfortunately, we rented there on we recommendation by the people who we rented accommodation with, but should have done our own research. If you do decide to go with them, get their full coverage to minimize further charges of future scratches, that may appear after you drop off the car. Wifi has to be purchased. Overall a clean airport, with uncomfortable chairs.

  One of the shitiest airports in the world. It is like a bus stop in a third world country. Hardly any services or amenities. What they call a lounge is just a glorified overpriced cafeteria. The place is as filthy as a pigsty. Staff across the board are rude and incompetent. Gate assignments change without any announcement which led to boarding chaos. It is sad that this is the only point of access into such a beautiful place.

  Beautiful Island, every time when you arrived at the airport, they will have musical and dancer to welcome all of the peoples who comes in visit to Tahiti, is one of their culture, with their lovely smile and "Maruru" words means "welcome"! Down side is that it takes forever to pass the immigrate, no AC, so humid and hot...overall is Lovely.
