Known throughout Europe as an industrial heartland and as the home of electrical powerhouse Philips, Eindhoven hardly has a pretty reputation. More recently, though, the city has established itself as a Dutch design capital, winning the title of World Design Capital for 2012, as well as hosting a number of major Academies.

While it might struggle to compete with the likes of Amsterdam in terms of tourism, Eindhoven’s reputation makes it all but essential for those with strong love of the aesthetic. The Van Abbe Museum is home to the work of Picasso, and widely acclaimed as one of the leading contemporary art museums in the world (and a match for the Tate Modern in London), while due to Philips, plenty of other areas focus on artificial light, and even creating art from it. Philips also plays a strong role with the town’s footballing powerhouse, PSV Eindhoven. An occasional European level force, in some ways PSV represent the soul of the city. If you’re hoping to catch a game, best book well in advance, though there are year round stadium tours to enjoy, too.

Stratumseind, the local nightlife street, has a great claim to fame too. Known for being the Dutch road with the highest concentration of pubs, ‘crawling’ all the way down is a recipe for a hospital stay, but a tamer trip makes for a thrilling night out. In De Bergen and Wilhelminaplein you can explore the winding, old-world backstreets, or sample the hundreds of obscure (and often pricey – you have been warned!) whiskeys on offer at De Gaper.

Art lovers are in for even more treats if they leave the city, with the chance to track down the sights of Van Gogh’s early artistic dabblings, a cultural attraction in amongst the plethora of cycle routes, as well as the short excursion to Belgium (a great chance to drop in on another country and a different outlook on life, should your trip be focusing on the Netherlands).

For lovers of football (PSV) and art, then, Eindhoven may well be the perfect spot. For others it’s easy to dismiss the city as uninspiring, but most will find something to love.

      • Tilburg

Everybody is welcome in Tilburg, the 'heart of Brabant'. Whether you would like to wander through the beautiful nature which surrounds the city or want to visit a museum, Tilburg has a lot to offer. Fancy a concert or a movie? It's all possible. But there are also many chances for studying, working and living over here.

Having more than 200,000 inhabitants, Tilburg is a versatile city that is growing and renewing in the suburbs and the centre.

Culture is an important issue in Tilburg. Although the city doesn't have many material examples of a rich cultural history, it has a lot to offer. Almost every evening you can enjoy live shows in the centre: popmusic in 013, jazz in Paradox, classical music in the Concertzaal and performing arts in the Stadsschouwburg.

On Wednesday nights during the summer vacation there are so called 'muses-concerts' at the university campus. Free concerts of well known artists in The Netherlands and Belgium. Next to that, there's the 'Kermis' (Fair) every July. It lasts for ten days and is one of the biggest fairs in Europe. Tilburg is also an excellent place to celebrate 'Carnaval'. Carnaval lasts four days (the exact dates change every year), Tilburg has a nice Carnaval Parade on Sunday afternoon.

Throughout the town you will notice the several red colored cycle tracks. The development of the city fortunately has not been at the expense of the scenery. Tilburg has many woods and parks like the Wandelbos, Oude Warande, Leypark and Wilhelminapark.

Historically, Tilburg is a worker's city, dominated by the textile industry. In the Textile Museum you can find more details. In the 70's unfortunately most of the old buildings were demolished to make way for more modern houses. So there is no cosy old center as in many other Dutch cities. Much of the architecture is new.

's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch in spoken language) (translated in English it means something like Duke's Forest) is the capital of North Brabant, a province of the Netherlands. The city is founded in 1184 and has about 140,000 in habitants. It's about one hour travel from Amsterdam (a direct train connection) and offers great opportunities for sightseeing, hiking and visiting historical places. It is considered as one of the most beautiful places in The Netherlands.

        Den Bosch (or 's-Hertogenbosch):
        - Birthplace and home of one of the greatest painters of the northern renaissance, Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450 – 1516).
        - You can visit the Saint John's Cathedral
        - Borders on a nature reserve
        - Noord Brabants museum
        - SM's (Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch)
        - Famous for it's Carnival festival (every February), Jazz in Duketown (every Pentecost) en Boulevard festival (every August)
        - Boattrip Binnen Dieze

When you are in 's-Hertogenbosch, you can easily extend your journey to the east (Nijmegen and Germany), the South (Eindhoven en Maastricht) and the West (Breda and Rotterdam). In Breda there is a direct train connection to Antwerp (Belgium).

Den Bosch has a nice city center with a great "warm" atmosphere. Nice cafe's and bars and the city is also very nice for shopping.

      • Kaatsheuvel
Kaatsheuvel is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is situated along the highways N261 and N628, and with a population of roughly 16,600, it is the largest village in the municipality Loon op Zand, which also consists of De Moer and Loon op Zand. Kaatsheuvel is also the capital of the municipality because the town hall is located here.

Kaatsheuvel's main attraction is "De Efteling" a theme park which is based on fairy tales. One of the founders was Anton Pieck. The Efteling is the largest theme park in The Netherlands, and as it opened in 1952, it is one of the oldest theme parks in the world. The Efteling is located in the town of Kaatsheuvel, in the municipality of Loon op Zand, and has received over 100 million visitors. In 1992 Efteling received the IAAPA Applause Award for Best Amusement Park in the World.

Originally the park catered towards children with a fairy tale theme. In over fifty years the park has evolved from a nature park with playground and a Fairy Tale Forest, into a full-size theme park along the lines of Disneyland. It is twice as large as the original Disneyland park and predates it by three years. Nowadays, the Efteling appeals to both young and old with its cultural, romantic and nostalgic themes and its variety of amusement rides.

Efteling 'officially' opened on May 31, 1952, when the Fairy Tale Forest (het Sprookjesbos), designed by the famous Dutch illustrator Anton Pieck, was declared open. Initially, the Fairy Tale Forest was home to some ten different fairy tales, all of them brought to life using original drawings by Anton Pieck alongside ingenious movements and lighting and sound effects designed by the Dutch film maker Peter Reijnders. The life-size fairy tales, displayed together in an atmospheric forest, proved to be an enormous success. In 1952 alone Efteling welcomed 240,000 visitors.

There is some debate about whether May 31, 1952, was the actual start of Efteling: some argue that 1950 should be considered the official year of the park's establishment, since in that year Stichting Natuurpark de Efteling, or Efteling Nature Park Foundation, was founded. Others prefer 1953, when Efteling was declared 'open' by a government official, coinciding with the opening of the park's second large restaurant facility that still exists as De Ballonvaarder.

If you want to enjoy the magic for more than 1 day, you can spend one or more nights in the Efteling hotel or bungalowpark.

      • Roermond

A city in the southeastern part of the Netherlands is called Roermond. This city carries an immense historical value as a town, at the bank of the Meuse River on the lower Roer. It has been awarded to the city rights in 1231. The management here designated it as a conservation area. With the passage of time, the town played a key role as a commercial centre; it was a principal town land in the duchy of   Guelders and it has been serving as the seat of the since 1559 of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Roermond. The towers of its two churches named as Roermond Minster or Munsterkerk in Dutch and St. Christopher Cathedral highlighted the importance of the historic town. Due to the importance of the two major churches, this town has been many listed monuments and buildings.

Roermond's old city centre is home to several historic monuments, including:

        Minster church (Munsterkerk)
        Stateroom of city hall
        The old cemetery
        Kapel in 't Zand
        Roermond City Hall
        St. Christopher Cathedral
        Carolus chapel
        National Indiëmonument
        Kasteeltje Hattem
        Rattentoren
The Galgeberg is a small hill in Roermond. It is in the Kapel in 't Zand-area of Roermond.

“Galgeberg” is a place famous for its gallows. Long time ago, the criminals were burned or hanged there. For example many witches were brought there to burn; the bottom line is that it was the biggest famous place in the Netherlands ever for the witches.

On the other hand, a problem is that Roermond is one of the unsafe places due to the close border with many cities with the fear of war anytime. Netherlands has been given the ranked 3rd for the most criminal city. Roermond, in 2007 successfully reduced its rank in the list of criminals and got 9th place. Efforts were being put to make the Netherlands more criminals free by stopping the major crimes such as house/car robberies and snatching.

      • Nijmegen
Nijmegen is located in the province of Gelderland near the German border. It is famous for the annual Four Day March event in July.

Nijmegen houses a university (the "Radboud University") which was founded in 1923 as the first Catholic university in the Netherlands (then called the "Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen").

Nijmegen is a very vibrant, lively city with a lot of nice bars and restaurants. Due to the presence of the university and HAN Hogeschool (another big school) the city is full of students.

Some nice things in Nijmegen are Sanadome, wich is a very nice spa-facility, the Africa Museum and the Valkhof Museum (situated at an historical spot where Charlemagne had his castle built).

Nijmegen is a center of commerce. Containers arriving by ship at ocean ports are offloaded to smaller boats and shipped to warehouses in Nijmegen.

      • Venlo
Venlo has been inhabited since the Roman Era. It is likely this habitation started and stayed here because this place was an important crossing of roads and a crossing of the river Maas.

In the Middle Ages Venlo was an important trading town at the river Maas, in the 17th and 18th century the town was occupied first by the Spanish, then the French. The town was severely damaged in the Second World War because the front line led right through the town’s center for a couple of months.

Today, Venlo is a trading-, expedition and industry town. The city is a center for a vast region, including the German Ruhr Area. Venlo is directly situated at the German border.

Every year during the carnaval you have some major events that attracts many people. It's one of the best places to participate with the northern European carnaval. In 2013 the city won an award for best citycentre of the Netherlands.
