• Panaji

  Panaji is the capital city of Goa state in India. The city has some decent beaches like Miramar and Dona Paula which are usually picnic spots. There are lots of things to do when in the Panaji city, Famous churches, river cruise on the Mandovi River, Casino’s, Shopping, national Monuments and site seeing.
  
  Panaji has a very good variety of hotels and restaurants. There are well maintained lodges also available for travelers which are widely used by backpackers. This is a lovely place to visit if you would like to experience city life in Goa. There lots of colonial buildings and can get a feel of how Goa was during the Portuguese rule.
  
  The city is situated along the river Mandovi and is a port for transportation of goods. One can board a cruise from here or just use the ferry across the river. Casino cruises are also available.
  Panaji has the main bus stand where there is a very good network of buses throughout Goa and other states. There are also options available for renting a 2 or 4 wheeler or hiring a Taxi. Usually renting a 2 wheeler is the cheapest and best option, if you know how to ride!

• Anjuna

  Anjuna village, famous for it's beach is located in North Goa. It's claim to fame until the late 90's used to be it's relative in-accessibility and seclusion which led to it's reputation as a topless beach and trance party heaven. However as this reputation spread and the infrastructure improved in Goa it was soon overwhelmed by tourists arriving in droves all trying to get a 'high' and look at the 'clothing optional tourists'. This influx of people has in turn driven away a lot of the western tourists who used to come for the seclusion.
  
  The eventual increase in the number of people heading to it's famed all night trance and rave parties for a 'high' also attracted the scrutiny of the police who ended up curbing a lot of the activities in the vicinity and has now reduced the beach to just another standard crowded attraction which is a shadow of it's past. Still this beautiful beach is much quieter when compared to the other beaches like Calangute or Baga.
  
  The beach is predominantly rocky with a sandy patch a bit away from shore and one has to be careful while swimming as there have been instances of rip tides here.
  
  Anjuna is also famous for the 'Wednesday Market' or what originally used to be the 'Hippie Flea Market'. A place where western travelers used to gather informally on Wednesdays to sell/pawn off belongings for some extra money. That has now changed and it is a full blown market on a Wednesday with hundreds of stalls hawking anything and everything imaginable at grossly inflated prices. From the quaint 'Flea Market' of maybe a dozen stalls with a few people and some good music to a couple of thousand people swarming through this quaint market it has also lost it's original identity.
  
  Options for accommodation along the beach and road to Anjuna abound in various price ranges. Anjuna is still relatively quiet as compared to other beach areas in Goa. Mapusa is the closest city and there is a regular network of buses though timings can be erratic.
