Nearly lost in time and to the shadow of the former Soviet Union, Armenia is one of those last European countries which have lain dormant over the years, their potential forced to wait until the tides of Communism finally receded. Now, as the waters pull back, a whole new country is emerging like a butterfly from the cocoon, and what beautiful wings this butterfly has.

Landlocked between Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran, Armenia hosts one of the most culturally rich heritages of the Eurasia region. The country resides in the highlands surrounding the region of the mountains steeped in religious lore as Ararat, the mountain where Noah’s Ark came to rest after the flood in the biblical tale, is located a mere 20 miles south of the border. There are remnants of the Byzantine Empire, as well as the Ottoman Empire, leaving the adventurous traveler with plenty of historical ruins to explore in their journeys.

Aside from the ruins and historical importance of Armenia, the land is a mountainous region of beauty that stretches on for miles. Visitors can explore the lengths of the Dilijan National Park, located in the northern part of the country, with its cool climate and evergreen forests along the banks of the Getik River. Reminiscent of the wooded vales of Switzerland, visitors can explore the beauty of the area while staying in the town of Dilijan itself. Or visitors can travel to the alpine Lake Sevan, high in the Armenian mountains, fed by nearly thirty different mountain springs and rivers. In addition, visitors can also enjoy the beauty of the Khosrov Preserve and the subsequent Forest, reserved as the hunting grounds for nobility for centuries, and now a nature reserve carefully nurtured to showcase the beauty of the natural Armenian countryside.

All in all, the combination of elements makes Armenia a hidden refuge for the experienced traveler. The economy is slowly building, and it is currently classified as a budding democratic nation that is aligned with the Western world.

If you begin heading through the Ararat valley, it is a flat barren area with poverty ridden towns dotting the road. You will see people working in the fields and around their houses. From every angle there are unobstructed views of Mt Ararat. You should stop at the Artashat Ruins. It was a capital of Armenia in 2nd century BC. It is in a pretty rocky and dry area. It has been partially excavated, but the work has stopped. You can still wonder around and find pieces of pottery and other items if you wonder around. You can also see the border of Turkey and the watch towers in the distance.

Little Ararat Again, just seeing Mt Ararat is incredible and inspiring. We found a couple of pieces of pottery to bring home, you might, also.

Moving on to Khor Virap Monastery, you should see the dungeon where St Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 12 years. He was secretly fed by Christian women who dropped food down a hole to him each day. You will have to stand in a jumbled group in a corner of the church. There was no clear direction as to what to do or what you should see. You may have to push your way to the front as people seem just to be standing there. It gets really hot and the air gets thick with sweat. If you stick it out and go down the ladder mounted in a narrow hole to the dungeon. It turned out to be round room that is 4 meters diameter and 6 meters tall. You will be black with soot from candles. There were a couple of niches used as alters. To the Armenians it is a very holy spot.

Mt. Ararat has two peaks, Great Ararat, at 16,853 ft (5,137 m) the highest point of elevation in Turkey, and Little Ararat, almost 13,000 ft (4,000 m). You have a commanding view from here.

Armenians have a unique culture, language and alphabet. This said, English and Russian are widely spoken, especially in Yerevan. The people are welcoming and hospitable; you‚ Äôll often find yourself being invited in for coffee or a meal especially in the countryside. It is also an incredibly safe city and country to travel in.
