As Angkor’s most famous temple complex, Angkor Wat is an inarguable highlight of Cambodia, or rather, of the region. Because of its status, the monument has been put onto the flags of Cambodia as a homage to her heritage. Iconic, tourist-ridden, and quite simply a must see. Formed in the 12th century and lost to the jungle – or at least to all but the most local of knowledge – for years, Angkot Wat is a delicate, beautifully symmetrical and notably detailed temple.

The complex is dominated by the temple itself, which consists of those statue-filled, pointed towers. It contains countless carved walls depicting the various God worshiped over the years. In the course of its existence, Angkor Wat has been a center of both Hinduism and Buddhism, and shows explicit signs of both, with orange-clad monks still wondering the grassy courtyards and Indian Hindu influences coming to the fore in the temple’s architecture. The 32 hells and 37 heavens of Hindu mythology - carved into the extensive southern gallery walls – make for a particularly stunning aside.

While you’ll want to join the crowds and drift around the inner sanctums, exploring the temple bridges (have an eye out for pushy postcard sellers and pickpockets), checking out the sturdy outer walls and lounging for hours amongst the palm trees lining the paths of the complex are all great ways to take it in, too. Many turn up for either sunrise of sunset, with the aim of grabbing the most spectacular pictures of the temple on offer, while others brave the heat of the day and avoid the worst of the tourist rush.

Angkor Wat is part of the Angkor temple complex, which stretches to incorporate dozens of other temples spread near and far, and it’s highly unlikely you’ll come all this way to see just one. While Angkor Wat is the most well known, other temples can be equally spectacular, with different focuses and a tendency to be far less inundated with coach tours.

If there’s only one place you see in Cambodia, make it Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. You’ll probably want several days to explore, and while the temples are undeniably one of Cambodia’s more pricey sites (around $20 per day for entry), they’re worth every penny in your pocket.

      • Krong Siem Reap

The place is known and famous for the implausible temple complexes close to Angkor Wat, thus Siem Reap is rapidly turning into a large attraction in its unique way. It has resisted and emerged from the 90s trauma of Pol Pot’s dictatorship to become a relatively rich corner of Cambodia all thanks to her tourist dollars calculated in US rates. Being the land of French superstores and shady, greened line avenues, the place can be called idiosyncratic.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Siem Reap without a trip to Angkor. Though expensive by South East Asian standards, the temples are undeniably magnificent, and are still towering and dominating despite being slowly reclaimed by the jungle, hiding lengthy walkways, phenomenal statues and tiny Buddhas amid the massive temple complex. If you have an appetite for adventure, cycle round them all, stopping for a soda and lime at the height of the scorching day, or head out early and watch the sun rise over the entrance bridge of Angkor Wat as the monks sing in their many crumbling temples. Best of all, get away from the main tourist spots and you’ll find you’re all but alone, save the harassment of young postcard salesmen.

When you’re done with some of the world’s most famous temples – and you should allow at least three days for that – head to the old market, Psar Chaa, where you can haggle over ample souvenirs or snack on a crunchy, deep-fried insect. Make the effort to go out and explore the Aki Ra landmine museum, a horrifying taste of Cambodia’s least welcome problem, or explore a less daunting insight into Cambodian history by taking in a nightly performance of Apsara Dance. If it is luxury that you crave, head for the delicate ambience and high-class services of the Amansara Spa. Then there’s always the ever-present roasted nuts, westernized bar scene, street-side rice paddies and a heady backpacker culture to explore.

When it comes to leaving Siem Reap though, there can be no better way than catching the speed boat past the floating villages of central Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake, back to capital Phnom Penh, dreaming of root-cracked temples and ancient ceremonies of a distant pass. Perfect.

        • Such an amazing, wonderful and historic place. This temple complex takes your breath away. It is massive. There are so many little things to discover. The architecture is so lovely. The garden is amazing. Really it is very difficult to describe this unique place. Definitely a must visit on your Cambodia visit!
        • Such a magnificent piece of history. I'm really glad we had a guide who was able to explain its history. It's the most famous temple, so if you go during high season, it'll be littered with tourists. Luckily I went during low season (June) and was able to enjoy it with much less people. It was also nice to have the overcast to block the harsh sunlight and see the temple in a dark setting that was so magical.
        • One of the most excellent and amazing place on earth. Should be classified as one of the wonders on earth. Biggest and largest place of worship in earth. Very very ancient and excellent architecture. Very very huge temple when it was created, then later converted to Buddhist monastery . Government should take more effort to maintain this wonderful monument.
        • Come here early to get a nice spot for that signature sunrise view. Bring your own breakfast while enjoying the sunrise. Bring mosquito repellent as well. Avoid the food stalls on the left side of the lake, the price isn't worth it. Angkor Wat is beautiful with all the carvings, etc. If you want to know more about the history of this place, there's always guided tour available for hire on the spot form roughly $10. You can also climb up to the Bakan which is limited to 100 people at any one time, so come back here in the late afternoon or evening if you want to go up because it'll be empty in the evening and you can enjoy the sunset as well.
        • This is a truly wonderful place to visit. There is so much history and heritage in this vast outdoor location. If you ever get the chance to visit, do not miss it. Buy the 3 day pass and travel with a tour guide as there is just so much to know and to learn. A fantastic world heritage site, highly recommended.
