• Liechtenstein

  Most recently in the spotlight due to the tax-haven nature of the country and the resulting controversies between itself and the United States, Liechtenstein is a tiny Alpine country sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria. While an independent state, it has close ties to Switzerland, and is considered the last remnant of the old Holy Roman Empire. The country has an exceptionally high standard of living and features some of the most amazing mountain scenery on the planet, with its capital of Vaduz being a major center of international banking and commerce for tax haven individuals from all sorts of countries.
  
  Liechtenstein is known for its natural beauty, and rightfully so. There are literally dozens of medieval castles, cathedrals, and Gothic remnants scattered throughout the countryside, and the mountains within the country are quite possibly the most stunning ever seen. Accommodations and transportation are the highest standard, but are also exceptionally pricey. The country boasts one of the highest personal income rates in the world, and it has become known as a tax haven over the years, with over one-third of the population being made up of foreigners, and the country is constantly working on keeping its relations with the European Union at the highest level.
  
  Due to the relative smallness of the country, and the fact that most of the population lives within the Rhine Valley, it's fairly easy to see most of Liechtenstein during just one trip. Most people coming here are doing so for one of two reasons: to take advantage of the tax haven status or to explore the mountainous countryside. There are literally dozens of hiking and biking trails, and some of the best mountain biking terrain in the world. Overall, the country feels fairly Swiss, which is natural given its close ties to Switzerland. In fact, there is no airport within Liechtenstein, with the closest being in Zurich, so getting here means you will probably be doing so from its neighbor in the first place.

• St. Gallen

  St. Gallen is the capital of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.
  
  It is the largest town in easter Switzerland (with around 160,000 inhabitants). The main tourist attraction is the Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its renowned library contains books which date to the 9th century.
  
  St. Gallen is situated in the north-eastern part of Switzerland in a valley around 700 meters above sea level. It is one of the highest cities in Switzerland and it can receive a lot of snow in winter. The town is nicely situated between Lake Constance and the mountains of the Appenzell Alps (with the Säntis as the highest peak at 2502 meters). It therefore offers excellent recreation areas nearby.
