best neighborhood for short stay in Chiang Mai Thailand?
Hi there, what is the best neighborhood to be in for a stay of seven days? Friends recommended the Niman area but others recommended the old city. Thoughts?
I’d like to be able to have easy access to all the main sites and of course convenience (public transport, restaurants, etc....) especially since I’ll be traveling with kids. I heard Niman is a hip area full of cute cafes and the old center is more interesting for first time visitors.

It's actually depending on what kind of activities that you and your family want to see. There are some locations that are really cool, like the temples. They're located throughout the city. Another thing would have to think about is traffic on the roads from where you're staying. Especially if you have children. The more into downtown, the busier the roads are. But they're still enjoyable to wander through the city.

It really depends on what you want.. Niman is party central...old city is hippie dippity.
With kids I'd go for inside the city...plenty of transport to get to Niman or the zoo. There is a nice park, good alleys for biking, and a great pool at Lotus Hotel...just outside. I'd plan your excursions rather than worry about location unless going to malls is your thing...Niman has a lot of traffic which you can escape in the alleys of old town:)
