Despite being stripped of its capital city status in 2005, Yangon (Rangoon) is still the most populated city in Myanmar and draws considerable commerce. The city has a cosmopolitan feel to it, thanks to the diversity of its people from countries such as China and India.

The Shwedagon Paya, a stupa heavily laden with gold and said to be home to eight of Buddha’s hairs, is the city’s main attraction and is located at the heart of the city. Near the Yangon River, the buildings and street layout are a good example of the city’s British influence. The area still has a British feel to it.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's most well known international icon was released from house arrest in November 2010, and now a member of the "Pyithu Hluttaw" the country's Parliament.

Although Naypyidaw may have been declared as the new capital of Myanmar, Rangoon still retains an exciting mixture of tradition, modernity, religion and commerce.

There are three distinct seasons: a rainy season starts from June to October, a cooler and drier, they call it winter starts from November to February, and a summer, hot dry season from March to May. If you plan to visit Yangon, the winter season is the best, less humid and cooler than the remaining seasons, and you can see a lot of visitors. Nevertheless, major festivals like new year celebration "Thingyan" (the water festival, equivalent to the Thailand Songkran festival), falls during the middle of April.

In 2012 tourist arrivals in Yangon reached the 1 million mark, an increase of 300% from the previous two years. Consequently, Hotel and guesthouse accommodations are very tight at present. Travelers are advised to make hotel reservations several months in advance.

      • Not my kind of city
When I visited Yangon last year in October it was my first experience with Asia. I have to admit I’m not much of a city person so it shouldn’t be a surprise I didn’t like Yangon that much. Too crowded, too much pollution and not so many famous landmarks. One exception is the Schwedagon Pagoda, which is a must if you decided to stay at least one day in Yangon. We stayed one day, spending our time wandering in the city center but didn’t mind leaving the next day. Fortunately taxi’s are quite cheap in Yangon, so you can easily see a lot of the city in a short amount of time.
