One of the most beautiful coastal Mayan sites in the region, Tulum stands out among the rest as one of the earliest “resort” destinations on the planet, established long before the Victorian era made seaside holidays a world-wide phenomenon back in the 19th century. The Mayans were using this place as a center for relaxation, worship and solitude centuries ago, and the beauty of the area has been well preserved over the years. From the turquoise waters to the sandy beaches and the ruins of the Mayan architecture surrounding, this is easily one of the most relaxing destinations on the planet.

The first mention of the city was in 1518 in a text written by Juan Diaz, who was part of a Spanish expedition to the region. Since then, it has evolved into what is now the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico, offering a stunning view of the Caribbean and ruins at the same time. And since it's only 80 miles south of Cancun the place is a veritable bee-hive of tourism, year-round.

Tulum is actually broken down into three different regions which all share the same name: Tulum Pueblo, Tulum Playa and Tulum Ruinas. The first is the tourist trap, with the hotels, stores, cafes, banks and otherwise. Playa is where the fancier spa hotels and best restaurants can be found, as well as self-service cabanas that you can rent. Ruinas, on the other hand, is where most of the actual ruins are. Keep in mind that these are not all within easy walking distance of each other, and taxis can be expensive. This is a tourist resort, after all.

Tulum offers access to a wide variety of Caribbean splendor, such as the beaches, the snorkeling, the food and the hospitality. Meanwhile, the ruins themselves offer a unique opportunity coupled with a beach resort experience, which is unlike any other place on Earth. It’s easy to see why the ancient Mayans chose this spot, and you will fall under its spell from the very first moment you set foot in the ruins.

      3.82 Km from Tulum
Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Cobá. The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexi...

    • Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya, also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 307 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum, although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 kilometers (25 mi) to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

The Riviera Maya is famous for its large scale all-inclusive resorts and a historical tourism base of smaller boutique hotels as well as the many fine-dining restaurants available along the highway 307 and on or near the beaches.

A major attraction throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef aquatic activities dependent on the coastal water and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (also known as the Belize Barrier Reef) which begins near Cancun and continues along the whole length of the Riviera Maya continuing southward to Guatemala. This barrier reef system is the second longest in the world.

Activities at the most visited locations include Jet Skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming in cenotes, swimming with dolphins, zip-lining, horse riding, sailing, and guided jungle tours. Archaeology is also a big tourist draw in the area, including the popular archaeological sites operated by the Institute Nacional de Archaeological such as Tulum on the coast, and Chichen Itza and Coba located some distance inland. The self-named eco parks of Xcaret and Xel-Ha also include some smaller archaeological ruins as part of their attractions, but these natural water theme parks operated by private business consortia attract much larger crowds due to the diversity and range of activities provided, such as swimming with captive dolphins.
