  • Overview You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove
Spetses, last of the string main islands in the Argosaronic region, is wooded, hilly and dotted with stately mansions. With few motor vehicles, most transport is by bicycle or donkey carriage. Beaches – some sandy, some rocky – are less crowded than the other islands and there is a lot of after-dark entertainment of offer.
  • Getting there? You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: chinalove
Spetses is a 4-5 hour trip by regular ferry from Athens, or faster by hydrofoil.

    • Epidaurus Theatre
Built in the 4th century BC, it is the best preserved of all the ancient theatres in Greece. The limestone benches sat 12,000 spectators, and the acoustics are so perfect that if you stand at the top you really can hear a pin drop down in the orchestra. Greek drama is still performed here every summer.

    • Poros
The ferry approach to Poroc – through the extremely narrow channel that separates this pine-covered island from the Peloponnese – is serenely beautiful.

The charming port town climbs up the sides of a small hill, sporting the typical island architecture of white walls and blue woodwork. The long waterfront promenade is lined with fishing caiques and is a colourful place to inspect the day’ catch.

This is also a popular summer resort, and offers splendid yachting, snorkeling fishing and water-skiing.

There are many secluded coves within walking distance of the town, and a longer but pleasant hike (5km/3 miles) will bring you to the remains of a temple to Poseidon where Demosthenes, the famous Athenian orator, committed suicide rather than surrender to one of Alexander the Grea’s generals in 322 BC.

Poros lies 2 ½ hours by ferry from Athens, and 1 ¼ hours from Aegina.

    • Nafplio
Nafpilo, or Nauplia, makes a pleasant base for exploring the surrounding region.

Overlooking a large bay, the town is a picturesque mix of neoclassical and Ventenian-style houses, Turkish fountains, waterfront restaurants and mosques.

A well-preserved Venetian fort towers about the town, which offers two good museums.

    • Saronic Islands
On even the briefest Athens holiday, you can have a taste of the island life and the open sea. The islands of the Saronic Gulf are only a couple of hours away from the Greek capital.

Three of them – Aegina, Poros and Hydra – can be visited on a one-day cruise; ask at any travel agency or your hotel.

      • I loved the island , 9th of September event was amazing near the port
      • I ve spent allot vacations here and Im very fond of Spetses. Its proximity to Athens is also appealing! Its beaches are good nothing mind-blowingly beautiful but nice&clean to swim in especially the rear side of the island(agia paraskeuh, agia marina and zogeria). I also like the strict policy on No Cars without permit to come to the Island. You will need to be a keen bicyclists or have a motorbike licence to do a full rotation (27 km circumference I think).
      • Beautifull Island
      • Beautiful island!
      • Always star class!
      • nice greek island but please stop saying it is an island with no car. too many motorbikes. they are everywhere. from 8am to 10pm it is a continuous flow of motorbikes, with cars and trucks too. really unpleasant. some restaurants are on the road and you can smell the gas. we visited in low season. summer must be awful. we will not go back.
      • Very nice traditional island
      • In love !
      • Most magical and amazing island of the Peloponnese area! I am absolutely in love with the old port and all the amazing creeks all around this green paradise :)
      • Quiet island and great for weekends, close to athens (2h30). Cars are forbidden during summer in the center, only around the island. Its better to rent a motorbike and beware because roads are very narrow and drivers careless. Spetses is a high cosmopolite island and prices are very high. Night life has not great variety but is ok. Locals try sometimes to cheat (sometimes no receipts are given).
      • What a wonderful place! Rent a bike and go explore!
      • One of the most beautiful places in the Greece, and no complains about the motorbikes! They are part of the island!
