The ferry approach to Poroc – through the extremely narrow channel that separates this pine-covered island from the Peloponnese – is serenely beautiful.

The charming port town climbs up the sides of a small hill, sporting the typical island architecture of white walls and blue woodwork. The long waterfront promenade is lined with fishing caiques and is a colourful place to inspect the day’ catch.

This is also a popular summer resort, and offers splendid yachting, snorkeling fishing and water-skiing.

There are many secluded coves within walking distance of the town, and a longer but pleasant hike (5km/3 miles) will bring you to the remains of a temple to Poseidon where Demosthenes, the famous Athenian orator, committed suicide rather than surrender to one of Alexander the Grea’s generals in 322 BC.

Poros lies 2 ½ hours by ferry from Athens, and 1 ¼ hours from Aegina.

Three of them – Aegina, Poros and Hydra – can be visited on a one-day cruise; ask at any travel agency or your hotel.

    • Epidaurus Theatre
Built in the 4th century BC, it is the best preserved of all the ancient theatres in Greece. The limestone benches sat 12,000 spectators, and the acoustics are so perfect that if you stand at the top you really can hear a pin drop down in the orchestra. Greek drama is still performed here every summer.

    • Vouliagmeni Beach

The resort of Vouliagmeni is an upmarket place, with a yacht club and deluxe hotel complex. Also here is a public beach with water-skiing facilities, and you can charter a fishing caique at the marina. The town is named after a sulphur-springs lake, which has been converted into a spa, where the warm, lime-coloured waters are supposed to be good for muscular aches and skin ailments.

Between the lake and Varkiza you’ll find parking niches dotted along the highway from where you can climb down to the scores of rocky covelets which decorate the coastline. This coastal stretch is not recommended for either children or poor swimmers, but the lovely beach at Varkiza, with its pistachio trees growing almost to the shore, is perfectly safe.

      • Was lucky to have gone on a one day cruise and our first stop was Poros Island. So beautiful and peaceful, wanted to be there forever. The weather was cloudy and the lighting was perfect for a portrait. I am sure it is an artists inspiration. Not many shops or restaurants maybe because it was off season. I am sure it would be swarming with people in Summer.
      • My favourite little town on the island. Lovely clean and not over-crowded beaches. Small and quaint town. The locals can definitely make more of effort to provide more reasons to come to the town (compared to the next town Skala that is so much more geared for tourists)
      • Not that much to do although it's a good place to take nice pictures.
      • Unique place combine sea mountain and volcano, wonderfull nature, good food warm people
      • A great place to enjoy a break, you can watch the world go by and eat and drink very well indeed.
      • Cute little island in Greece, peloponnese part. You can access it by car with a ferry every 30 minutes. The strip of restaurants on the harbour is a good place to eat. A short little walk to the clock tower where you can overlook the port is very nice. A short drive to the adjacent island will take to beautiful sand beaches where you can have a nice swim. Some of the beaches are not free; you have to pay for the umbrella and the sun bed.
