      • Puerto Princesa
Puerto Princesa is the capital of Palawan, in the Philippines. It is not necessarily a destination in and of itself, at least not according to the mass tourism industry, which mainly uses the city as a headquarters for excursions to the outer regions of the island itself. This is a shame, because the city offers a wide variety of adventures for a wide variety of visitors, with the prerequisite of being willing to look beyond the surface and delve into the shrouded secrets of the Philippines. Often heralded as the cleanest and most modern city in the Philippines, as well as one of the most environmentally friendly, Puerto Princesa boasts access to such destinations as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park—otherwise known as the Underground River—and places like Honda Bay, and the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conversation Centre, well known for its crocodile farms.

Exploring Princesa requires an understanding of Filipino life, and an understanding of the history of its people and cities. In this case, Princesa can be traced back to the Princess Asuncion, a Spanish princess who unfortunately died at a young age, at which point Queen Isabella II renamed her to Puerto de la Princesa. The settlement as it exists today dates back to 1872 when it was founded by Spanish colonials. And while the vast majority of the ruins have been modernized, you can still see traces of Spanish colonial in some of the buildings around the island, and in the city.

Puerto Princesa is not a tropical paradise city. It is packed with people, and easiest way to get around is by jeepneys and tricycles. Accommodations and food will depend on your budget, and while the city definitely has its own unique appeal, the main reasons to come here are for the destinations surrounding the island and the city itself. Either way, this is one of the best places to experience the Philippines in a modernized setting.

      • Palawan
Palawan - the long, narrow island in the southwestern part of the Philippines - has often been called the last frontier of the Philppines: there remain indigenous tribes that have not fully integrated into modern society. This is not to say, however, that the island is untouched by development. On the contrary, large tracts of clear cut land can easily be seen, and there are many cities and tourist resorts, especially on the northern half of the island.

Puerto Princessa City, the capital, has an airport and can be easily reached from Manila. There are several other airports in the north of the island and on smaller islands immediately to the north. Once there, however, getting around Palawan is a bit difficult; more often than not, a boat will be needed to get to the more remote villages.

Northern Palawan: The more popular and scenic resorts in Palawan are located in the northern area, however. They are known because of the white sand, crystal clear waters, and house reefs you can explore while snorkelling or diving. More information can be found on the net by typing 'Northern Palawan' on any one of the search engines.

Palawan, the only Philippine island cited, has been rated by National Geographic Traveler magazine as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007, and the 13th best island in the world having "incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes. One of the most biodiverse (terrestrial and marine) islands in the Philippines... The island has had a Biosphere Reserve status since early 1990s, showing local interest for conservation and sustainable development".

Here are some reviews of Puerto Princesa International Airport - don't forget to let us know how you got on by using the drop box at the bottom of the page, or joining our community and making a review.

        • There's food once your in the boarding area waiting room. Wifi works surprisingly well and is pretty fast! Comfortable seating, announce flights, clean bathrooms.
        • Small provincial airport that serves its purpose. Be prepare to fall in line and stand up on the waiting area as it can easily be overcrowded. There are small shops inside as a backup, if you forgot to buy local treats from Palawan. They have a small play area for the kids while waiting for your flight. They also have a breastfeeding area too for moms out there. Prepare to pay a terminal fee of 200php for domestic flights and 700php for international.
        • Prepare to pay a 200 PHP terminal fee. Once inside, there's not much to do. Don't attempt to have breakfast, it's awful. Apart from that, fairly efficient and an overall good experience!
        • Inbound: watch out for tricycle and van drivers that will try to rip you off. Puerto has exact tariff rates based on distances for all public vehicles. If you're riding a tricycle from the airport, catch one outside the airport gate about 50 meters from the terminal building. Outbound: there is a terminal fee that is a bit pricey for a small airport but they do have clean rest rooms. If on tight budget or just spending sensibly, there is a small fast food outside and east of the terminal building after the PAL office that offers local cuisine with local prices :)
        • Simply the worst airport I've been. Queues everywhere, noisy and claustrophobic place, 3 security checks (!!) and lots of machines not working. Plus you have to pay a stupid terminal fee of 200php.
        • Terrible airport. Come early and maybe you will find a cart to push your luggage, maybe not. Wait in line in the heat outside to go through security clearance to enter the airport. One machine is all they could afford so expect delays. Once inside, enjoy the semi cool atmosphere and work up a sweat while you try to discover which snaking line you need to be in amongst the crowd. There is the check in line, airport tax line, and security line. Have fun and remember to smile! Once they have extorted the 200-700 pesos airport tax proceed to security check #2. Only enough staff for one machine here as well. Inside the boarding area things improve slightly with more space and a decent bathroom. However limited food and drink options mean you probably don't want to be here any earlier than you need. Congrats Puerto on building a brand new airport that leaves a bad inpression in tourist and local minds alike!
        • Brand spanking new airport. I saw some negative reviews here but those were refferring to the old airport at the other side of the runway. This new one is already built to international standards and facilities
        • Prettiest airport I've seen in the Philippines. :) 2 coffee shops to choose from when you've checked in. BOC - expensive but yummy; My T Cafe is cheaper but taste is so so. :) We tasted both to compare.
        • Better than before. You can buy coffee and bread to wait your departure at 2nd floor. Price is reasonable. One cup of coffee is about 120 pesos.
        • Brand new biggest terminal than the oldest one. Good improvements. Departure area : no food, no coffee shop 🤔😕
        • Spacious terminal unlike the old one. Parking space is available and cost 20pesos. Designated for tour vans and private cars. Arrival area is clean and spacious. Carts are available. Gates on the Departure area are designated per airlines which is more organized. Snack bars are available for quick bites. No tubes, passengers must walk to the planes when boarding and deplaning.
        • Beware as in 2016 the exit and entrance is at the south side and now south side is closed, the new entrance is at the north side with a brand new and clean terminal. So all the hotels and restaurants on Rizal Rd are now far away from the airport. Victims! Some people says here you need to weight your bag, they charge overweight, they took all the empty bottles. We didn't go through any of that, we even can use mobile boarding pass to get on our plane, that means we didn't even print it out. Been to Philippines 4 times, traveled around for more than 70 days. The first airport in Philippines that we encounter this convenience. 5 star for that. And the security check is smooth as hell, from bag drop to waiting in the boarding room, 10 min at most.
        • New airport, it is still a small airport so limited restaurants and shops but clearly a big step up from the previous place. I had to kill a few hours there and was able to spend it comfortably. If you want you can have a massage for a decent price. The only thing they should really improve it WiFi.
        • Again Google thinks it knows better than someone who has actually been there and rejected my attempt to move the marker to the location of the new terminal building, which is north of the runway and inaccessible from Rizal Avenue.
        • This small provincial airport is really quaint. It's easy to get out, tricycles are readily available outside the terminal, and drivers are all very friendly...
        • This is where your taxes should go. Continuous renovation of the airport for the convenience of the riding passengers. I love this newly-renovated airport. It is not big, but a good enough to accommodate a handful tourists from different parts of the world. This is the main gate to the New Seven Wonders of Nature, PP Underground River. Come and enjoy the airport.
        • This is now a much improved airport with neatly designed interiors. But still, because of the volume of passengers and air traffic conditions, it can easily be filled up and become crowded. It's a good thing though that the airport's air conditioning system is in excellent working condition. I hope it stays that way.
        • This is newly built airport which currently offering the flight from Cebu , Manila and El Nido. free wifi for one hour, coffee shop, one restaurant and some souvenir shop. Well arranged both arrival and departure.
        • Thank goodness it has ice cold air conditioning. They have touristy stuff and some food concessions here. Easy to get in and out of.
