AhmedabadAhmedabad, also called the walled city has a lot to offer. It is perhaps one of those Indian cities which is a unique blend of Muslim and Hindu cultures. For the ones fascinated by heritage architecture, this is the place to be, with numerous awe-inspiring mosques, forts, grand havelis, temples, synagogues, and the very famous Sabarmati Ashram. This city also houses a Loius Kahn classic, the Indian Institute of Management, India's premier business school.
The local craftsmanship is a much valued treasure - beautiful wooden carvings in the facades of houses, intricate carvings and motifs a single piece of stone, Gujrati ornaments, handlooms, etc. Ahmedabad doesn't have any bars or pubs or any place that serves hard-drinks, because it is in the dry state of Gujrat, the birthplace of India's arguably greatest freedom fighter of all times, Mahatma Gandhi, also called the father of the nation.
River Sabarmati divides the city into old and new city. West of the river is the new city, with innumerable malls, shopping plazas, gardens, colleges. East of the river lies the old city, the walls now in ruins, but housing some very imposing ancient structures.
