• Quito

  Often sitting under an almost unrealistically blue sky, flanked by soaring volcanoes and home to a heady mix of developing-world modernism and lively history, Quito is part UNESCO World Heritage Site; part gentle, winding back streets drenched in quirky local characters, and part rural houses where you'll still find farm animals hanging out in the living room.
  
  It’s certainly a quirky and vibrant place, with Ecuadorian flare oozing from every corner. The Old Town is still teeming with Spanish influences, based around a striking old plaza and home to the old Cathedral in South America. You’ll find a district of colonial homes, each with their own traditional balconies, and many opening up during the day as souvenir stalls or tiny, intricate teahouses.
  
  Market day means strolling amongst a city of umbrellas, shopping for leather and panama hats (which, oddly enough, are from Ecuador), perhaps following it up with a swift ride into the hills on the mammoth aerial tramway, arriving at Cruz Loma with a perfect, clear-blue view of the city.
  
  There’s an excellent zoo, too, though it seems a shame to choose it over the eye-catching environs. Just south of Quito is the towering Cotopaxi Volcano, a popular and substantial hiking destination amongst a national park that’s been nicknamed ‘Volcano Alley’. Them there are the Haciendas, which vary from the old and rustic to luxurious near-hotels. These grassy homes are perfect for horse riding, hiking, swimming, and relaxing in amongst the wildlife, soaking up an extremely authentic experience of Ecuador. It can be wild and enticing, but is often just relaxing and educational.
  
  There’s something a bit special about Ecuador’s capital that makes it a worthy addition to any South American itinerary, and for all the lush sights, you’re ahead of most if you can put your finger on quite what produces such a magical vibe.

• Otavalo

  Otavalo is a largely indigenous town in Imbabura Province, Ecuador, well known for its huge Saturday market. This market days is touted to be the largest inb South America. The town, which is in a valley, is surrounded by the peaks of Imbabura, Cotacachi, and Mojanda volcanoes.
  
  The Indians of Otavalo are famous for the weaving of textiles, which has a 400 year history. The Saturday market draws both locals and tourist to a great event. The town has an expansive market and although main market day is Saturday, in the Plaza del Poncho there are wares available for tourists throughout the week. Early morning sees the trading of livestock.
  
  Otavalo was traditionally an area made up principally of farming communities but with the growth of tourism has begun to focus more on the handycrafts. Tourism had become the town's main industry and as a result many hotels have been set up in colonial buildings and in the spectacular surroundings as well as a number of restaurants.
  
  As Otavalo is famous for its textiles, many of the nearby villages and towns are famous for their own particular crafts. Cotacachi, the center of Ecuador's leather industry, is known for its polished calf skins and leather products.. In San Antonio, where the local specialty is wood carving, the main street prominently displays carved statues, picture frames, and furniture.
  
  Also of note, Otavalo is also known for its Inca-influenced traditional music and musicians. There are many musical groups currently traveling around the world promoting Inca music (sometimes known as Andean New Age). This style of music has had notable commercial success worldwide.

  This is an attractive and interesting place. You can go to the top of a large monument and see a good panoramic view of the area. There's a Pacari chocolate shop and museum. There are several artisan gift shops that have souvenirs, including ponchos made with alpaca wool. There are also several good restaurants.

  A bit touristic, but hey, you don't visit the middle of the earth (or at least, one of them) every day. The musems are nice, the scientific explanations and experiments interesting. Facilities were relatively clean, but for 5$ admission, I would expect toilet paper. If you need/want to eat, I would do that on the grounds, even though it might be more expensive than outside. We ate in one of the restaurants on the street leading up to the site, which was cheap, but only got mediocre food and low sanitary standards.

  The half of the world is a great place to visit. Although modern tools have proven that it's not the correct line (correct one is about 200m north), it's still a great visit to learn a lot about Ecuadorian many cultures and the way the French expedition determined it was the half of the world many, many years ago. There are many souvenir shops (a lot) and many restaurants and museums. On the weekends there are cultural presentations, so make sure you go on a Saturday or a Sunday. There is a children playground, so all in all is a great way to spend the day as a family or alone (entrance is USD$5). You may bring food to have lunch in one of the many green areas around the site.

  Middle of the world is a beautiful place! They had restaurants at the top, a beautiful monument, and even live dancing! It was like a small town in the mountains that happened to be right on the equator... it was very cool! The locals were very nice and there were shops with souvenirs and other items to purchase. The views were the best part. We could see long distances, and the sun shining through the clouds was absolutely wonderful!

  The museum has a lot of information and it is fun to do the activities. There are many shops for souvenirs. Very cool place to visit.
