This is a barren, rocky island turned cosmopolitan artists’ colony – the Greek answer to Capri or St Tropez.

Hydra can be reached by a regular ferry service which runs from Athens.

The journey time is 3 to 4 hours, which still leaves you enough time to explore the pretty town and have a leisurely lunch or a swim before catching one of the late boats back.

Its spectacular harbor remains hidden from sea view until just before you enter the port. Then, as if a curtain had suddenly risen, Hydra Town appears. Its cluster of Itlantic villas rises majestically up the slopes above glittering masts and dazzling sails. There are no roads and no cars, but many donkeys.

In Lieu of sandy beaches, swimming is best off shaved rocks (the clarity of the water is memorable).

Outside town, the island is extremely bare, though you can always hire a small boat to take you along the north shore, where you’ll find occasional shade.

Monasteries and churches dot the rugged slopes. Most visitors simply stick to the port, however, where they browse in the boutiques and art galleries, or watch the ‘beautiful people’ going about their holidays.

    • Poros
The ferry approach to Poroc – through the extremely narrow channel that separates this pine-covered island from the Peloponnese – is serenely beautiful.

The charming port town climbs up the sides of a small hill, sporting the typical island architecture of white walls and blue woodwork. The long waterfront promenade is lined with fishing caiques and is a colourful place to inspect the day’ catch.

This is also a popular summer resort, and offers splendid yachting, snorkeling fishing and water-skiing.

There are many secluded coves within walking distance of the town, and a longer but pleasant hike (5km/3 miles) will bring you to the remains of a temple to Poseidon where Demosthenes, the famous Athenian orator, committed suicide rather than surrender to one of Alexander the Grea’s generals in 322 BC.

Poros lies 2 ½ hours by ferry from Athens, and 1 ¼ hours from Aegina.

    • Saronic Islands
On even the briefest Athens holiday, you can have a taste of the island life and the open sea. The islands of the Saronic Gulf are only a couple of hours away from the Greek capital.

Three of them – Aegina, Poros and Hydra – can be visited on a one-day cruise; ask at any travel agency or your hotel.

    • Epidaurus Theatre
Built in the 4th century BC, it is the best preserved of all the ancient theatres in Greece. The limestone benches sat 12,000 spectators, and the acoustics are so perfect that if you stand at the top you really can hear a pin drop down in the orchestra. Greek drama is still performed here every summer.

    • Aegina
Aegina, situated 1 ¼ hours from Piraeus, is famed for its pistachio nuts, ceramics and local wine. It also boasts the well-preserved Temple of Aphaia, dating from the 5th century BC, and many Athenians have summer houses here.

      • A jewel of an island! From the second we set foot in the tiny harbour I instantly regretted not allocating more time for this place. Hydra looks like something out of a fairytale, with quiet little nooks just minutes away from the main port and pleasant hikes. There's a selection of beaches, some wilder, some more commercial, depending on your taste.
      • Hydra was the first island we visited on the one day 3 island cruise. Choice of 2 activities- either do the walk tour which isn't far or ride the donkeys which is actually mules. I totally recommend the tour as you learn so much about the island and its history. On the tour you get to have a taster from the local bakery. Island is called Hydra (which means water) yet has no running water. Water is brought in by ship. There are no cars or any source of automobiles used on this island except an ambulance. Mules are used to get you around. Roger Moore loved this island as he spent some time here and also had a part of his film Octopussy filmed on Hydra. Jacky Kennedy bought some facial products from the pharmacy here. A must visit when visiting Greece.
      • Cool little island I took on a day trip from Athens. No vehicles allowed and it's very small. Definitely being your spouse or loved one is this is not a place to be solo.
      • Lovely island. No cars, so lots of walking and hills and lots of cobblestone streets, so not suitable for those with rickety ankles and knees.
      • Love the cats. Haha.
