This museum houses some outstanding treasures from the sanctuary. Most famous is the 5th-century-BC bronze statue of the Charioteer (Inioches). With a victor’s diadem around his head and a look of calm pride, he is astonishingly life-like. His eyes, which are made of white enamel and black onyx and are framed by tiny bronze wires for lashes, are preserved untouched.

Other marvels not to miss are the 6th-century-BC Sphinx of Naxos, with the head of a woman, body of a lion, and wings of an eagle; the archaic kouroi of warriors from Argos, and fragments of the life-size silver bull that stood at the entrance to the Sacred Way.

The spiritual centre of ancient Greece, Delphi, sits in a stunningly beautiful setting on the slope of Mount Parnassus. According to legend, Zeus let loose two eagles from opposite ends of the earth. At the spot where they met he threw the Scared Stone, marking Delphi as the centre of the world. Pilgrims journeyed from the farthest corners of the empire to consult the ancient oracle here, and during the 5th and 6th centuries BC, no important decisions of state could be taken without coming to Delphi first to seek its advice.
