• Charleroi

  Charleroi is the largest city and municipality of Wallonia, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium.
  The municipality features an industrial area, iron and steel industry, glass works, chemicals, and electrical engineering. Charleroi is in the center of a vast coal basin, called Pays noir. Many slag heaps still surround the city. Charleroi is also known for its publishing industry with Dupuis, one of the main publishers of Franco-Belgian comics, located in Marcinelle.
  
  The Charleroi area was already settled in the Prehistoric period, with traces of metallurgical and commercial activities along the Sambre. Several public buildings, temples and villas were built in that area in the Roman period. Burying places, with jewels and weapons, were also found. The first written mention of a place called Charnoy dates from a 9th-century offering in the Lobbes abbey, which lists various neighboring towns and related tithe duties. During the Middle Ages, Charnoy was just one of the many small hamlets in the area, with no more than about 50 inhabitants, part of the County of Namur.
  
  The history of the city of Charleroi starts in 1666. In the spring of that year, Francisco Castel Rodrigo, Governor of the Netherlands at the service of the five-year-old Charles II of Spain, expropriated the area from the local lords to build a fortress near the Sambre. In September of that same year, the name Charnoy was officially replaced by that of the newly founded city of Charles-Roy (King Charles), so named in honor of Charles II. The chronogram FVNDATVR CAROLOREGIVM (MLCDVVVI), can be found in the register of the parish of Charnoy for the year 1666. A year later, Louis XIV’s armies under the command of Turenne besieged the unfinished fortress. Vauban completed the fortification work; the future city was granted its privileges; a bridge was built over the river; and free land was distributed to the inhabitants.
  Public transport is run by TEC (Transport En Commun), the Walloon public transport company.
  
  The greater Charleroi region is served by bus lines and a light rail Metro system (Métro Léger de Charleroi). Part of the latter is famous for incorporating one of the few remnants of the Vicinal, the former Belgian national tramway
  network.

  Manneken Pis is just a little walk from Grand Place and it is a statue of a child peeing into a pool. It is a small bronze statue which is generally believed to symbolize the irreverent spirit of Brussels. It is a nice place to visit on your tour of Brussels.

• Ixelles

  Ixelles (in Dutch: Elsene) is one of the 19 municipalities in the Brussels Capital Region, located in the south east from Brussels center. The origins of Ixelles date from the foundation of the Abbey of La Cambre by a Benedictine nun in 1196. The buildings of the Abbey of la Cambre now house a school for visual arts, the National Geographic Institute.
  
  Ixelles is divided into two parts by the upscale Avenue Louise, which belongs to the municipality of Brussels. This makes Ixelles, together with Baarle-Hertog and Mesen one of the only three Belgian municipalities with territory divided over several, non-bordering parts.
  
  On its territory we find the main campus of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the campus de la Plaine.
  
  Ixelles is known throughout Belgium for its concentrated population of people of African origins near the Porte de Namur/Naamsepoort, and is known as Matongé after the marketplace and the commercial district with the same name in Kalamu, Kinshasa.
  
  The famous shopping arcades, the Galerie d'Ixelles and the Galerie de la Porte de Namur are both located in the heart of Matongé.
  
  Several fairs are organized in Ixelles, including the Spring Fair on the Flagey square, which takes place between the fourth and sixth Sunday after Easter, and the Boondael Fair at the end of July.

• Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium

  This museum features the Museum of Historical Art (Musée d'Art Ancien-Museum voor Oude Kunst) and Museum of Modern Art (Musée d'Art Moderne-Museum voor Moderne Kunst). The collections at the historical section are majorly Belgian works from 14th to 20th century displaying works like the portraits of Hans Memling from the late 15th century, works of Hiëronymus Bosch, Lucas Cranach's Adam and Eve, just to mention a few.
  
  The modern art section features works by artists like van Gogh, Tanguy, Ernst, Matisse, Dalí, Chagall, Miró, Permeke, Delvaux, De Braekeleer and so on. Ticket costs €8 for adults per museum or €13 combined ticket. Students, seniors and disabled visitors will pay €2.50 while children between 12 and 16 will pay €1.25. Children under 12 years of age will enter for free and entrance on every first Wednesday afternoon of the month is also free.

• Grand Place

  Located in the central part of the city, Grand Place is encompassed by the city tower as well old buildings that were constructed 300 years ago. A bright illumination envelopes the Grand Place in the evening making it an astonishing sight to behold. Musical and light shows are held in some evenings and you can enjoy the Belgian waffle with caramelized sugar locally known as gaufre de Liège-Luikse wafel. You will get the best ones from the small shops at the northeast corner of the place.

  This museum is home to over 7000 musical instruments of different times from almost every part of the world. • Jeanneke-Pis

  Jeanneke Pis is a contemporary fountain as well as statue situated at the eastern part of the Impasse de la Fidélité / Getrouwheidsgang (Fidelity Alley). It depicts a small girl in short pigtail hair squatting and peeing in an apparent, contented manner. It was erected in 1987 and has been a source of amusement for strollers since then.
