Nesvizh is one of the cities of Belarus and has rather an extensive and progressive history. It was first officially registered in 1223 and later was merged with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This insignificant piece of land was passed to the Radziwiłł princely family who made it their home until the year 1813. This transfer proved beneficial as many milestones were achieved since then and contributed to its success.

In 1562, the first Belarusian book “a catechism” was published by Symon Budn and that too in the Latin alphabet. Next, Nesvizh Castle was established in 1583. Soon after, two monasteries and a collegium were constructed in the years 1584 and 1598. They all belonged to separate religions.

The list proceeds as in 1586, the city was given the Magdeburg rights. This became possible with the efforts of Prince Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł who was also known as “the Orphan”. Later in 1627, a pharmacy was established after the city having experienced two devastating epidemics.

The Swedish Troops badly damaged the city during The Great Northern War during the 1700-1721 time frame. It was restored back to its glory by Michał "Rybeńko" Radziwiłł in 1720. Further establishments were discovered after that like the silk belt factory in the 1740’s and 1750’s (although later on it was moved to Sluck but still), Nesvizh Radziviłł Theatre which was founded by Franciszka Urszula Radziwiłłowa who was Michał's wife. The theatre also included a ballet school and a choir. Michal also renovated the Corpus Christi Church and formed a printing factory, a military school and a couple of textile manufacturers as well.

The city was occupied by the Russian troops in 1764 and 1768 and about 10,000 volumes of books found in the city’s library were handed over to the Russian Academy of Sciences. Other than books the library also contained paintings and other masterpieces which of course were also confiscated.

    Main sights

Facade of the Corpus Christi ChurchThe Corpus Christi Church (constructed 1587-1593) is one of the earliest Jesuit churches in the world and It’s one of the very first buildings that were constructed in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth period. It’s diverse yet flamboyant design proved to be exemplary for further constructions planned in Belarus, Lithuania and Poland.

Nesvizh Castle, the family complex of the Radziwill noble family, is a World Heritage Site.

    • Baranovichi
After Great Patriotic War Baranovichy became one of the biggest centers of Brestskaya voblast. Baranavochy is a nice green town. Its citizens love to spend their leisure time in two of the town’s parks. A visiting card of the town is a metal Sparrow sculpture.

Baranavichy region has a long history. The most ancient settlements are referred to the Stone Age, they inhabited the area near Koldycheva lake on the right bank of river Shchara. The region was in the centre of hostilities from 18 century till World War II, that’s why so many places still remind of its tragic past. In Stalovichy village one can see a boulder with a commemorative token which tells about the fight against Russian invasion. The fight which was won by a famous Russian commander Suvorov, and as a result Baranavichy region and a huge part of Belarus irrevocably became a Russian territory. World War I, also made an impact on Branavichy: During 1915-1917 there used to be a front line that divided the region into western and eastern parts. Fierce fighting took place in the area demolishing all around, the most violent memory of that is a mass-casualty burial.

There’s a woodland park near Baranovichy, with a very interesting memorial complex, opened in 1972. 3000 Czechoslovakians were taken off the country by Hitlerites and shot here in June 1942. A sealed road leads to the gate – a line of life and death. Beyond the gate there’s a fenced square. Poles that surround the square have copper bells, jingling from puff.

Baranavichy region offers big number of monuments, museums, churches and cathedrals, mansions and oldest country-estates and bowery. Saint Pokrovsky cathedral (1924-1928) preserves a mosaic, Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross – wooden construction of 1924, located in Kuybisheva Street (вулiца Куйбышева). There’s an oldest in Belarus museum of regional studies. The museum has different sections with wide collection of exhibits.

Without a doubt Baranavichy and Baranavichy region should not be missed.
