Nesvizh is one of the cities of Belarus and has rather an extensive and progressive history. It was first officially registered in 1223 and later was merged with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This insignificant piece of land was passed to the Radziwiłł princely family who made it their home until the year 1813. This transfer proved beneficial as many milestones were achieved since then and contributed to its success.
In 1562, the first Belarusian book “a catechism” was published by Symon Budn and that too in the Latin alphabet. Next, Nesvizh Castle was established in 1583. Soon after, two monasteries and a collegium were constructed in the years 1584 and 1598. They all belonged to separate religions.
The list proceeds as in 1586, the city was given the Magdeburg rights. This became possible with the efforts of Prince Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł who was also known as “the Orphan”. Later in 1627, a pharmacy was established after the city having experienced two devastating epidemics.
The Swedish Troops badly damaged the city during The Great Northern War during the 1700-1721 time frame. It was restored back to its glory by Michał "Rybeńko" Radziwiłł in 1720. Further establishments were discovered after that like the silk belt factory in the 1740’s and 1750’s (although later on it was moved to Sluck but still), Nesvizh Radziviłł Theatre which was founded by Franciszka Urszula Radziwiłłowa who was Michał's wife. The theatre also included a ballet school and a choir. Michal also renovated the Corpus Christi Church and formed a printing factory, a military school and a couple of textile manufacturers as well.
The city was occupied by the Russian troops in 1764 and 1768 and about 10,000 volumes of books found in the city’s library were handed over to the Russian Academy of Sciences. Other than books the library also contained paintings and other masterpieces which of course were also confiscated.
