Looking for important things or something to do or a place to go see near Monteverde? Here is our list of options.

    Filter By Tags:

    • Monteverde
The Monte Verde cloud forest reserve is a green island in the top of the mountain. Most of the mountain's Pacific side is deforested and used for cattle feed, but east side is generally protected due to few non profit reserves that are buying property and preserving it for future generations. Largest one is Monteverde conservation league that manages Children's Eternal Rainforest, area few times larger than actual national park. National park is well organized and designed, great experience for everyone.

There is an abundance of high flying zip lines, canopy walks and ATW tours, louring tourist that are looking for that kind of excitement.

Accommodations range from cheap hostels to extravagant and high priced hotels. You will also find some great organic food at good prices. Coffee from this area is top world quality and you must try it.
Monteverde Provincia de Puntarenas, Monteverde, Costa Rica
    • La Fortuna
One of the most intimate mountain destinations for travelers seeking that extra-special something that sets the destination apart from the major tourist hubs is La Fortuna de San Carlos, otherwise known simply as La Fortuna. Nestled in the shadow of one of the most active volcanoes in the world—Arenal Volcano, which has been continually erupting since 1968 on an average of 41 times per day—and smack-dab in the middle of some of the most beautiful countryside in the world with surging waterfalls, hot springs, and lush countryside, La Fortuna is beyond breathtaking; it is an adventure without compare, and one that must be experienced first-hand to understand completely. This is Costa Rica at its finest.

The only way in is by road, and you can either take a bus from one of the surrounding cities such as San Jose, San Ramon, or Tilaran, or you can hire a private shuttle. It is not recommended to drive because the roads are poorly marked, so unless you are looking for a little extra adventure, stick to public transportation.

Once you arrive in La Fortuna, prepare for a cultural adventure. Accommodations are fairly modern since this is a major tourist destination, and while the volcano itself is the primary reason most people come here, there are also plenty of other things to see and do in the surrounding countryside, such as Lake Arenal, Fortuna waterfall, the Arenal Butterfly Conservatory, or tours through the surrounding rain forests. This is one of the best places to hire a horse and go on a horseback ride through the wilderness with a guide, and the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is considered to be one of the most biologically-diverse places in Costa Rica. Soak in one of the many hot springs, go white-water rafting, hiking, or simply relax and enjoy the beauty of La Fortuna with the volcano in the background. Either way, you're in for a treat.
La Fortuna Alajuela Province, La Fortuna, Costa Rica

      • Monteverde is a beautiful place. The fact that you're in the middle of a tropical cloud forest is amazing. If you're in a correct place and you're lucky, you can see the Pacific ocean and from a place called "The Window" in the reserve you can see the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The weather as expected in a cloud forest is unpredictable, there are high chances to rain at any hour of the day. This place is focused on tourism, it means that it will be expensive. You'll find a lot of restaurants and hotels. To get there you'll need a big car or a lot of patience to get there, because of the roads. I visited the Reserve and you have to be prepared to walk a lot. I recommend to start early in the morning and if you have the chance pay for a guide, do it; they are trained to see things that you probably won't see. You can do a lot of things like canopy, tree climbing, night walks, etc. Monteverde, is one of the most beautiful places I've ever be, if you're in Costa Rica this is a must.
      • Nice place to walk in the rain forest without all the ziplines fuzz. Nice treks, not too hard or too easy. Nice views for pictures.
      • Lovely cloud forest reserve. It is possible to view the continental divide although during our visit it was too cloudy! Trails are well marked and accessible.
      • A good place to see some cloud forest for cheaper than Monte Verde. I didn't see much wildlife but I went in the afternoon so not a great time to see some. As usual with these parks the estimated walking times assume you are 75 with a cain. I did all the trails in under 4 hours. Footwear wise I started to worry that my flip-flops would not be up for it when everyone else was wearing hiking boots and they rented out wellies but it was absolutely fine, no issues - obviously this is likely different during rainy season.
      • It was cool seeing the rainforest
