Masada (a romanisation of the Hebrew מצדה, Metzada, from מצודה, metzuda, "fortress") is the name for a site of ancient palaces and fortifications in the South District of Israel on top of an isolated rock plateau, or large mesa, on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. Masada became famous for its attributed mythic significance in the First Jewish-Roman War (also known as the Great Jewish Revolt) when a siege of the fortress by troops of the Roman Empire led to a mass suicide of the site's Jewish Sicarii fugitives when defeat became imminent. Today, Masada is a very popular tourist destination.

Geography:The cliffs on the east edge of Masada are about 1,300 feet high and the cliffs on the west are about 300 feet high; the natural approaches to the cliff top are very difficult. The top of the plateau is flat and rhomboid-shaped, about 1,800 by 900 feet. There was a case mate wall around the top of the plateau totaling 4,300 feet long and 12 foot thick with many towers, and the fortress included storehouses, barracks, an armory, the palace, and cisterns that were refilled by rainwater. Three narrow, winding paths led from below to fortified gates.

"Dead Sea is as old as the Jordan rift vally, part of the well known Syrian – African rift. Some say it is 60000 years old, some say less some say more, but this doesn't affect the uniqueness of the location and environment. It is a closed lake, was fed through centuries by the Jordan River and minor streams and springs from the eastern and western side, until 1964, when the Jordan River was diverted to lake tiberias by Israel to supply the Israeli population with fresh water. Hence over 700 million cubic meters of water annually stopped nourishing this eternal lake. Due to that reason and other minor reasons, level of the

Dead Sea started receding in an annual rate that exceeds 80cm. This represents a serious ecological threat to the lake and the surroundings. The government of Jordan is working hard on realizing a project, with international help, to provide the Dead Sea with controlled volumes of water from the Red Sea through an artificial canal. This ambitious project could help tangibly in saving the Dead Sea environment.

The Dead Sea lies 413 meters below sea level (2002), (396 meters 1980) considered the lowest point on earth. In an arid environment, less than 70ml of annual rain, 330 sunny days a year, with low humidity that never exceeds 60% evaporation is so high all over the year that caused the Dead Sea water to become the saltiest in the world" Experience the feeling of floating on water for yourself in this truly unique place.

    • Kerak
Karak is a small town named after a crusaders castle perched high on a hill top.

The city itself stems from biblical times, when it was known as Kir or Moab. As it lay along an important trade route between Damascus and Egypt (and still does, as a matter of fact) the place was of significant importance to pretty much every army that ever marched these lands.

The castle was built by the crusaders in 1142. It was later used as a stronghold by the Mamluks and Ottoman Turks.

The city lies along the King's Highway, and makes for a nice side excursion on the way from Amman to Petra or Aqaba.

      • Astounding to think of ALL the energy, time and man hours that went down here. First of all King Herod’s Palace....built with the sweat and tears of slaves in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE! The engineering for it’s time is mind boggling....how they captured the TINY bit of water that this area gets. Then also the very important chapter in Jewish history where the outnumbered and surrounded Jews took their families and then their own lives rather than be defeated! Just a big ‘wow’ all around. That said it is HOT HOT HOT! We went in June. Crazy hot. You will need water and a hat. It was so hot no one was allowed to walk up. Everyone had to take the gondola which was SO crowded. All in all a great and interesting spot to go. Highly recommended.
      • I walked up in March 2018 and enjoyed the beautiful landscape.
      • Masada before and during the light show
      • Very nice
      • Masada National Park is one of the must-visit sites in Israel. You can get to Masada from the direction of Arad and climb the embankment or get to the Dead Sea and choose a climb for the Snake (climbing a bit hard) or cost an additional fee for the cable car. The place is hot and it is recommended to drink plenty of water. There are many points with water scattered around the site. The visitor center has a kosher restaurant. There are services in several places on the site. The site is accessible for wheelchairs and carts.
