Jökulsárlón , a glacial lagoon that has carefully been looked after by Mother Nature herself. It has grown immensely, both in depth and length, since it emerged in the 1934-1935 time period. It expanded from being 7.9 km square to 18 km square and is 200m deep, giving it the title of Iceland’s second deepest lake. This however is attributed to the continuous melting of glaciers that contributed to its topographical change.

It is located between Hofn and Skaftafell National Park at the southern boundary of a glacier named Vatnajökull.  It isn’t that far away from the sea and efforts are being made to keep it this way as it connecting with the sea may take down the only road in the vicinity that has been made alongside the isthmus. The Icelandic Ring road lies nearby and the area can be approached by people coming from areas in between Höfn and Reykjavík by bus.

Fjallsárlón and Breiðárlón are two more glacial lakes near Jökulsárlón and the lake itself has fragments of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Its shore is inhabited with big size seagulls called skúas in the summer season. They tend to get aggressive if any threat is detected against the nests that they’ve built along the lakeside.

        • What an amazing place. Driving towards the bridge and seeing the lake full of icebergs for the first time is a truly memorable experience. There is food, drink and toilet facilities. Companies offer trips around the lake. We took a boat trip on a zodiac. It was an amazing experience at a very special place.
        • It's just marvelous amazing breathtaking ... it is one of the wonders of Iceland a must see. Good thing it is free. Parking is free there's toilet in a shop or a visitor center in the area. Along the highway route 1 you will not miss it
        • Beautiful and unique glacial lagoon, absolutely worth the visit. I was told the ice there was formed over a millenia ago; the whole cycle is quite fascinating. I did a boat tour and felt it wasn't necessary, since you can basically see everything from the shore anyway (plus, all the pollution from the boats in the lagoon.. Didn't feel right contributing to that).
        • Most beautiful place I have seen so far. Nature at its best, purest scenery you can find.
        • A bit of a drive, but totally worth it. There are giant icebergs and there is a glacier. You can often see seals and its fun to skip rocks on the smooth water. The tide can impact how many chunks of ice are floating, but it's pretty good anytime. It is a jumping-off point for some tours and glacier hikes so it can be a little crowded, but it's fun to see the huge tour vehicles too. Stop at Diamond Beach across the street on the West side of the bridge on your way out.
