    • Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya, also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 307 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum, although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 kilometers (25 mi) to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

The Riviera Maya is famous for its large scale all-inclusive resorts and a historical tourism base of smaller boutique hotels as well as the many fine-dining restaurants available along the highway 307 and on or near the beaches.

A major attraction throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef aquatic activities dependent on the coastal water and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (also known as the Belize Barrier Reef) which begins near Cancun and continues along the whole length of the Riviera Maya continuing southward to Guatemala. This barrier reef system is the second longest in the world.

Activities at the most visited locations include Jet Skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming in cenotes, swimming with dolphins, zip-lining, horse riding, sailing, and guided jungle tours. Archaeology is also a big tourist draw in the area, including the popular archaeological sites operated by the Institute Nacional de Archaeological such as Tulum on the coast, and Chichen Itza and Coba located some distance inland. The self-named eco parks of Xcaret and Xel-Ha also include some smaller archaeological ruins as part of their attractions, but these natural water theme parks operated by private business consortia attract much larger crowds due to the diversity and range of activities provided, such as swimming with captive dolphins.

    • Cozumel
An island off the coast of south eastern Mexico, Cozumel is a haven of clear blue water, palm trees, white sands, diving and a host of other things that add up to spell paradise. The island’s still one of Mexico’s essential tourist stop offs, despite being all-but flattened by a hurricane back in 2005, and is one of the world’s foremost destinations when it comes to anything underwater. From snorkeling to scuba diving, you’ll find some of the best under-sea views this side of the Great Barrier Reef.

Scuba diving classes are ample and relatively affordable, with dozens of companies eager to take you out and throw you overboard, and, though the reef is not quite as good as it used to be due to the hurricane, it remains world class. It’s not all about scuba, of course, with swimming with dolphins, glass bottomed boat tours and deep-sea fishing offering alternative ways to enjoy the water that are well worth exploring.

There’s only one town of any note on the island, San Miguel, and that’s the place to go if you’re shopping for souvenirs, looking to compare water sports prices, or just want an affordable place to stay. The local cuisine (think a seafood-heavy take on Mexican) and abundance of Tequila on offer here is a lot of fun, too.

Most likely, though, you’ll prefer to spend time making the most of the natural scenery, which includes Chankanaab National Park (lagoons and Iguanas), and even some exceptional surfing off the less populated side of the island. Hunt hard, and you’ll find some small Mayan relics to explore, tucked away in the less fashionable corners of the island.

Basically, though, Cozumel does exactly what it says on the tin: blends Mexican culture with a Caribbean climate and obsesses endless on all things water sport. Which is certainly not a bad thing, providing you’re ready to make the most of an underwater ethos that’s every bit as enticing as any other you’re likely to find around the Caribbean.

    • Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos, unlike most of the Mayan Riviera, remains a sleepy little fishing village perfectly suited for lounging on the beach, grabbing a bite to eat in the dusty little village square or enjoying the excellent diving and fishing in the area.

Lots of American ex-pats wander around and overall, Puerto Morelos feels a bit like going back in time. Situated right off the main highway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos remains an isolated get away spot that is well worth visiting.

      • Stayed here on our honeymoon 10 years ago. The staff was excellent, and we had a great room on the bottom floor right off the pool. It was so nice to just walk out of our patio door and jump right in to cool off. There was a little restaurant right outside the hotel on the street that was great for breakfast and lunch. Not sure if it's still there, it wasn't officially part of the hotel. Mamitas beach was close by right down the road and the hotel gave us a discount pass. The only thing we didn't like were the beds, which were the worst we've ever slept on. But the charm of the hotel was so great that it just about made up for it. Here's to hoping they've replaced the beds by now!
      • The hotel itself is pretty nice, the staff very helpful. I reserved via Expedia so got a pretty good price. The pool area was very nice, but for us the water was cold, and it's shaded for a good part of the day. My issues were with our particular room, (103) the shower area and also the fan. The fan only worked on HI and then wobbled so bad I thought it would fly off the ceiling. The shower wall was in very poor repair, several loose pieces on top and a crack along the vertical tile & grout area that looked like they could easily fall off. See pictures. Overall the room was kept quite clean, but lacked an alarm clock. If you just want a place to sleep and shower this hotel will work, but don't expect any sort of luxury, at least the room we were in. Room Tip: Take a good look at the room before you get comfortable, make sure everything works. The lower floor does let the noise from chairs being moved, or high heeled shoes being worn transmit from above. WIFI was quite good in the lobby but didn't work well at all from the room.
