The city of Famagusta is one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in the eastern Mediterranean and, in its present state of preservation, is equal to that of the old cities of Carcassone and Ragusa (Dubrovnik).

One full day spent in Famagusta will reveal the history of Cyprus in a nutshell.

Much of Cyprus is an outdoor museum, but only here is so much historical interest concentrated, that is a showplace for all.

Much of the history of the town is obscure as there are no written records and our only source of material is from travelers accounts of merchants passing through.

Some historians declare that it was founded by King Ptolemy Philadelphus of Egypt in 285 B.C. It is believed that the city occupies the site of ancient town of Arsinoë. Famagusta prospered through the destruction of the neighboring Salamis, the former capital of the island.

By the year 1300 A.D. the town was one of the principal markets of the Eastern Mediterranean, the rendezvous place of rich merchants and the headquarters of many Christian religious orders as revealed by numerous churches of various denominations still to be seen in the town today. This was the time of the Crusades and when the rich Lusignan dynasty ruled Cyprus.

Must see sights/attractions include: WaterWorld Themed water park, Ayia Napa Monastery, the Sculpture Park, the harbour and the sandy Pantachou Beach to name but a few.

        Did You Know

The name Ayia Napa is derived from Ayia (holy) and napa (wooded valley).

Known locally as Lefkosia, Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and the only remaining divided city in Europe. Turkish Cypriots in the north and Greek Cypriots in the south.

Surrounding the old medieval city is still the original 16th century Venetian wall.

Today, Nicosia is a thriving metropolis with many department stores, restaurants and many fine museums.

Nicosia's airport is closed, so visitors arrive at Larnaca, Paphos or Ercan Airports.

      • Larnaca

Larnaca (Lárnaka) is a modern city built on the remains of ancient Kition an underground complex of temples dating from 1300BC; it is the third largest town in Cyprus, has the largest airport and is situated to the south of the island.

During the day Larnaca town centre has lots to offer from a local market selling anything from fruit and vegetables to hand made goods. The lace products are of great quality and are ideal for taking home as presents for family and friends. It is 5 km from Larnaca International Airport to the city centre.

Larnaca is the birthplace of the stoic philosopher Zeno and it was also considered the second home of St. Lazarus. St. Lazarus after his renaissance reached there and then later on it became its first Bishop.

The town regained its standing in the 17th century, when it became the consular and commercial center of Cyprus, and its port once again flourished with trade. It was also here that the British landed in 1878 to begin their rule of the island.

        Must see sights/attractions include:

Salt lake near the airport which looks like snow when it's dry
The Church of Lazarus - built over the tomb of Lazarus
Hala Sultan Tekke - an abandoned mosque which was previously built by Ottomans
