  Painfully pricey and wonderfully chilled out, Norwegian capital Oslo is surrounded by awe-inspiring nature and home to an enviable range of museums. Spend your morning strolling down the steep sides of the dramatic nearby Fjords, the afternoon mixing museums with striking architecture, and the evening warming up around a log fire, trying your best to keep the pace down and stretch the budget to the end of your trip. Oslo is a very safe place for travelers.
  
  There’s not much here you can’t see on foot. You’re some way short of the northern lights, but there’s still an eerie glow to be enjoyed walking the harbor at night, while you can get a taste of the olden days taking in the rustic Viking ship. Wander those impressive museums, and you’ll find yourself face to face with Munch’s psychedelic ‘The Scream’, as well as trotting amongst the equally frightening ski jump memorabilia in the inspiring ski museum.
  
  Oddly enough, you'll probably want to spend a large amount of your time outside the city, too. The outskirts of Oslo are truly phenomenal, and allow for a plethora of outdoor activities ranging from ice skating and kayaking to skiing and stunning hiking all within a very accessible distance. If you’re willing to go a little further afield, you can add whale watching to the list, too, not to mention the incredible scenery of Norway’s craggy Fjords.
  
  The 13th century Akershus Fortress guards the headland and offers visitors guided tours of the modernized, renaissance structure it’s become. At the Norwegian Museum of cultural history you can dabble in folk dancing and funny hats, while the Oslo sculpture park is a surrealist city center escape that takes you on a winding, playful journey.
  
  If you’re on a backpacker budget, Oslo will blow it out of the water. But weigh that up against a colorful culture, eclectic nightlife and a true taste of near-arctic nature no more than an hour or two from the capital, and you might just want to go for it anyway. If you have cash to burn, on the other hand, you’ll have an absolute blast.
  
  In summer time there are some good places to go swimming. Bygdøy, Huk, Ingerstrand, Hvervenbukta and a place further up Akers Elva which you wouldn't really believe its possible to swim in. Tøyen badet is close to the Munch museum while Frogner badet is situated close to Majorstuen.
