Overview You can't Edit
Users Assigned: KazmiChichen Itza is one of the much-talked-about Mayan ruins sitting in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula, and is considered one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, but its importance as a center for visitors was established thousands of years ago when it was first built. Most people visit the ruined city as a day trip from places like Cancun, but the best way to experience all that Chichen Itza has to offer is to stay in one of the Mayan communities that are spread around the surrounding region, celebrating the Mayan culture and heritage and allowing you the opportunity to spend several days exploring the ruins and immersing yourself in the majesty of what once was.
Chichen Itza was one of the major centers for the ancient Mayans, and the size of the place is enough to make one pause in simple amazement at just how epic the accomplishments of those architects and builders are. While it is possible to take it all in by yourself, local guides are available who can give you a more detailed trip through the area, with English being spoken and understood by almost everyone here. Keep in mind that the entire city is an ancient site, and walking is the only mode of transportation, so bring comfortable boots and hiking gear. Also be prepared for some fairly high temperatures in the daytime, with almost no shade available, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
There are literally dozens of buildings to explore while you are in Chichen Itza, ranging from the Temple of the Warriors to the Temple of the Jaguars and the Pyramid of Kukulcan. The surrounding countryside is filled with Mayan ruins as well, meaning you can spend literally weeks here if you want to truly capture the Mayan experience during your trip to the Yucatan.
At the entrance you will find various shops and lots of information about the site. Chichen Itza has been deemed one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and earns the reputation easily. Within the park you will find many unofficial vendors of Mayan decent who are selling various interesting things as well.
Chichen Itza is well worth the visit, but be sure to get there in the morning. It tends to get busy in the afternoon and when it is the hottest. Be sure to check out all of the temples and the cenote. Although a long walk, it is worth it.

This is one of the most fantastic places I've ever been. Absolutely stunning! It's definitely best to take a guided tour of this area as they fill you in on the history rich culture that existed here. So much amazing architecture to see. Definitely take sunblock, water, and some sturdy shoes (no flip-flops or heels people). Very enchanting place to visit. If you can unleash your imagination, you will travel back in time as you explore these mind blowing ruins. Good luck getting a picture of a pyramid without other tourist in it!

Wow. What an experience! Definitely recommend doing this whilst in Mexico. Word of warning, it is boiling! You need plenty of water and an umbrella to shade you from the sun. Because its so far in land, there is no wind. Don't buy any of the fake goods from vendors as they will get taken from you at the airport. The price sounds good, but its not worth wasting the money. All wood work is doused in petrol so the termites don't bite through it. And all the silver will turn your skin green. Other than that, would recommend it!

I loved the tour! The tour persons were knowledgeable and extremely kind and patient. The history of the Mayan people is quite interesting and answered many personal unknowns. I wonder why Colonizers try to eradicate any indigenous peoples in which they engage; attempt to destroy their history, their culture; then steal what's left, take to their countries and then the Colonizers claim it as their own? Everyone's history is important to the continued development and understanding of humankind. I hope Colonizing countries will return to the Mayan people as well as the Native Americans, the various African and Asian countries; and any colonized thievery that has happened throughout history back to their original cultures. This is only fair and decent and the human thing to do. I hope the Future has more respect for each other. Beautiful day, (very warm) and excellent transportation!

This is such a fascinating site to visit and one of the best places I have been to. There is so much history and culture to take in which was explained to us by our tour guide Eric, who was brilliant. There is much more to the site than just the El Castillo pyramid. We arrived early to beat the crowds which is worth doing to get the best experience. A must place to visit whilst in Mexico.

Fascinating history. Worth getting a guide to explain the history and tell the stories. Go early and beat the heat and crowds. Vendors are fun but sneaky with their "one dollar" bargains, that one dollar is actually a Mayan dollar which is $10USD. Just have fun, you're there to marvel at history, not to shop. ;) Theme song of the visit was, If You're Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands! :)
