From Auckland follow State Highway 1 north through Albany to Whangarei (approx 2 hours).

The Northern Gateway Toll Road is a 7.5km motorway extension just north of Auckland. Heading north the toll road begins just before Orewa and ends after the Johnstone Hills near Puhoi. The toll road gives motorists a choice between a more direct route or the scenic State Highway 17 via Orewa. Payment can be made at booths provide or made online within 5 days. http://www.tollroad.govt.nz/

Once you have arrived in Whangarei there are two routes to Russell. (Note that the last Ferry leaves Opua at 9.50pm).

Option 1 - via Opua and the car ferry

Follow State Highway out of Whangarei heading north. 10-15 minutes after KawaKawa is the turnoff to the right to Opua. At the bottom of the hill turn left for the vehicle ferry. There are two ferries operating continually, usually between 7am and 10 pm and bookings are not required. Exit ferry and continue on road to Russell. The Orongo Bay Holiday Park is approximately 5 kilometres from the ferry, on the right.

Option 2 - via Russell Road

Follow State Highway 1 out of Whangarei heading north. Fifteen minutes north of Whangarei, after you have passed the Whakapara BP service station turn right into Russell Road . This stunning coastal road offers spectacular views of unspoiled beaches and native forests. Do not turn off the bitumen onto a gravel road – all roads lead to Russell at that point including the paved road you are on. The Russell Road takes up to 1.5 hours and we recommend a stop along the way at the Helena Bay Art Gallery. Turn right at the T intersection at the end of Russell Road and Russell – Orongo Holiday Park is 500 metres on the right.

There is no public transport system in Russell and the local taxi can be fairly pricey. We suggest buying or renting a car/camper van. Having a car is the easiest way to get around, as is the case in most parts of rural New Zealand. We are only 5 minutes drive out of Russell village.
Alternatively, there is a fantastic board walk directly opposite the park, starting through the mangroves and then continuing on through native bush land. One direction takes you in to Russell village (approx 45mins walk) and the other direction will take you to Okiato, passing local wineries along the way (approx 40mins walk).
We also offer bike hire here at the park, so why not hire a bike to explore the area? The locals are used to sharing the roads with cyclists. Catch the ferry to Opua which will take you to the start of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. Passengers and their bikes can travel for $1.00 on the car ferry.

There is a direct passenger ferry service 7 days a week from Russell wharf to Paihia wharf. They also offer a ferry service (available on request) to Waitangi.

This is an interactive museum where you can really get involved - try your hand at tanning or printing whilst learning about the history from a passionate tour guide. This is where Catholic Missionaries translated religious texts in to Maori and printed and bound them in to beautiful books.

Russell Museum - Learn about the early years of Maori - European contact. Located in the heart of Russell close to New Zealand's oldest church - The Christ Church.
Te Whare Taonga o Kororareka (the treasure house of Russell) holds priceless knowledge of a bygone era and artifacts such as a stunning 1/5th scale replica of Captain Cook's ship Endeavour. One of the finest little museums in the country.

      • What a wonderful place to go and relax. My enduring memory is one of nature and peaceful walks. A useful base for exploring Russell. A word of warning to people looking for a place to be entertained - this is not it. The staff were both friendly and knowledgeable.
      • Camped for a night. Definitely a nice location and setting. Lady at reception went out of her way to offer area knowledge and locations for good hiking trails. However, none of our party slept well primarily due to the loud banter of other guests around the open fire place till 2 am. One of our party complained to reception about the issue (where a staff member kindly offered us all a refund and went out of her way to right things) Amenities are as standard for a normal holiday park. Generally Clean and Tidy, There is apparently a nature trail around the Holiday Park, (though never managed to find it). Saw two Kiwis.
      • They charged me $500 for a caravan that had duck taped windows, white tale spiders, bed bugs and ants. I found the owners and workers out of touch with reality. The owners are rude and are quick to take advantage of travellers (bad people). Do not Woff there you'll only get angry and leave anyway
      • Lovely pet friendly campsite. Here it's all about nature. With pool for the kids and playground. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Don't need to say, We'll be back !
      • This is a really friendly and relaxed site. The facilities were great, the pool being an extra bonus, and the staff were lovely too. I'd 100% stay again.
