Holiday town
Aviemore is easily acccessed from the A9, most long distances buses stop here and it has a major train station. It is conveniently situated in the Cairngorms National Park so attracts snowsports enthusiasts in the winter due to its proximity to Cairngorm ski resort and in other seasons, visitors come for the outdoor activities, nature, distillery and historical sites. Due to this catchment, the town itself is targeted at tourists, with outdoor shops, cafes, bars and accommodation. There is a supermarket that again is targeted at the tourist trade. There are a few restaurants and take-always - either pub grub or family oriented. There is a good nightlife scene so it's a great place for young people. The MacDonald hotel complex includes a large swimming pool, play pit and cinema so is a good place to keep children amused on rainy days. There is also a newly open Kartway. The Strathspey Steam Railway operates form a base in Aviemore to Broomhill. So not so good for locals, but great for tourists! In the local area, there is Rothiemurchus estate that has fly fishing, quad biking, zip wires and good walking trails. Glenmore forest has cross country skiing trails, Loch Morlich water sports (and beach!) and the Cairngorm Mountains includes many munroes so is fantastic for walking, biking, climbing and mountaineering. There are two golf courses and fishing available on the Spey. There are many rare birds in the area including capercaillie, crossbills and crested tit and the mixture of pinewood and montane landscape means it is a botanist's dream, so it's a good base for nature lovers. So a great place for a holiday!
